[bcab] Re: pacmate query

Hi Derek,

Brian pointed out that there's no modem in the Pacmate but that you can add
one. So that would be the thing to do. V21 is the CCITT modem standard going
back 20 years or more for 300 baud. The US used a different standard called
Bell 103. Basically it came down to the two frequencies used to represents 1
and 0, the US choosing a different set than most of the rest of the world.
Way back in the 80s I used to change resistors so you could convert Bell 103
modems to CCITT but modern modem are multi frequency and can handle just
about all the old standards, probably automatically.

I don't have a modem anymore but if I did I'd be tempted to go into
HyperTerminal and dial the number you gave just to see if I could get a
connection. I'm thinking that it would probably work on the ASCII character
set because some of these Textphones have a qwerty keyboard.

I notice that Freedom Scientific sell a thing called FSTTY, which consists
of a modem and some software. It also has a serial I/O card because the
Pacmate doesn't have a built-in serial port. At $1200 it seems a bit steep
to me. Why bother with an external modem at all? If I were doing it I'd just
use a PCMCIA modem (might even have a 20 year old one somewhere) and plug it
in to the phone - much less kit to carry.

Cheers,
Steve

Hi Brian
I am guessing now but I think the issue in respect of UK is that
in the US they tend to use bauddot but over here we need v21
for an easy connection for a textphone.

The aim is to be able to make, and receive a telephone call in text.
This is not same as sending a text message.

Here is an example of how I use a versa Braille (such a machine is no
longer on sale)

If I want ed to phone say RNIB on 08457023153 I would type on the
 Versa Braille the following:

 d1800108457023153 and then (press return)

the character d tells the modem to dial.
The code 18001 routes call into BT TextDirect.
I now read (in Braille) on the versa Braille the following:
"connected txd dialling txd ringing operator connected pls wait"

Txd means TextDirect.
In the example I have given once the operator is online he or she
will now relay to me (by typing to me) what the hearing person says.
I type back my reply, and the operator reads it to the hearing person.

So this is the sort of thing I want pacmate to be able to do in
a similar way to the versa barilla.
My versa Braille is more than 20 years o ld and well, is on its last
feet, soon may fail completely, so urgent need to find a replacement,
and I thought pacmate would be that replacement.
Regards,
Derek
