[bcab] Re: pacmate query

Hi Derek,

Let me say up front that I don't know much about the PacMate but the
literature says it comes with MSN Messenger, which should certainly do the
job.

The PacMate does have a built-in modem doesn't it? If you want to go person
to person rather than via the internet then all you need is a terminal
emulation programme, like the HyperTerminal programme that ships with all
versions of Windows. You can use this to issue AT commands to the modem, so
you can make it dial and establish a connection.

I can't understand Blazie's response and it sounds like you're being fobbed
off. This stuff isn't rocket science and has been around long before the
internet took off.

I think it's hard for a small business to get lottery funding. I apply
regularly but they always pick the wrong numbers.

Cheers,
Steve

Subject: [bcab] pacmate query

Hi All
If there is a pacmate user here, in UK, I hope you're bale to help.

I am looking for a Braille textphone and as there is no such thing as
a Braille textphone (in the UK anyway) I am thinking about Pacmate.

However, Blazie Engineering UK, are saying there are problems with
Pacmate for UK users, but they haven't made it clear what those problems
are.
All I have been told is that it would take about 3 months to do a fix,
and that would mean having someone work on the problems all day, everyday,
for 3 months, and they haven't the time to do that as only small company.

I must admit i am surprised that in a situation like this a company can't
seek a project funding say from national lottery, or maybe only a charity
can seek funding. But if we were to assume £6000 would be enough to fund
a programmer for 3 months.

Surely RNIB, Sense, and Deafblind UK could jointly fund such a project
with either Blazie or Sight And sound.
(I have also made contact with Sight & Sound and am waiting to see
if they can help)

Of course one could also argue why should a charity fund a business
project,
as at end of day it will be a business that will benefit.
True, so should BT fund this sort of project? I can see what BT may say,
they may say: "why should we what about the other telephone service
providers"

Anyway does anyone know what the real problems are regarding pacmate
as a textphone.

We need it to be able to:
be set for v21 (not (bauddot as in US)
And must support BT TextDirect system.
Grade 2 braille not an issue, as grade 1 is fine.

Regards,
Derek
