[bcab] Re: latest on Opticbook3600

I wondered Richard how I got it on mine, it is on desktop and laptop is it
part of Windows? or did it come with my Epson 3490 Scanner? I cannot recall
if it was on my former scanner Epson Perfection1652 well a similar number. I
was only trying to think of circumstances where I may need it. I have KI.11
by now I forget if you have it as well, John thought only 1 person would be
interested but seems a great many are wanting to scan books. The huge Tomes
John scans and he did I think70 in a matter of months last year. if he did
that with Fine Engine 5 I think he was lucky I found the paperwork PlusNet
sent to me, they quoted £149 this last October I think. What they sent was a
photocopy of a Websight poorly printed but read well by K.11 Emily a new
voice yelled it at me using 22 hertz whatever that means. Have you heard
Emily? she must be Danial's other half he bawled at me too, frightening
Jane into meekness. I experimented with all the voices and one speaks in a
whisper. I was delighted to find them. Dorothy.

Hi, Dorothy

I have absolutely no use for SPrint at all and, as stated previously,
don't have it on my PC.

Hi, John

Not offering anything concrete here - only commiserations! I was in the
fortunate position of buying the scanner with the knowledge that I
wouldn't want to use the in-built functionality - was just happy to be
getting a good scanner with a book-edge!

[bcab] latest on Opticbook3600

Dear List Members,
Thanks to all who gave me useful tips on the use of Opticbook3600 as a
book scanner. I have made some progress and am reporting for those
interested.
It is true that ABBYY Fine Reader 8.0 is very much better than ABBYY
Sprint 5.0. It does a lovely job and reads pages that version 5.0
scrambles. However, it is not possible to replace version 5.0, which is
embedded in the Opticbook scanner. I have to operate the process through
ABBYY 8.0, and only use Opticbook as the scanning device. This requires
a
couple of additional key strokes, but it works.
There is a later version of Opticbook entitled Plustek Book Reader v.100
but on the Plustek website, it does not disclose the identity of the OCR
device. Enquiry discovers that it is only versionSprint 5.0, so it is no
better, and not surprising that they did not want to publicise the fact
that the OCR on their latest model is no better.
The upshot is that I will be able to scan and read books but I am left
with a rather expensive scanner, the only advantage of which is the book
edge. This is, of course, a not inconsiderable advantage, but the fact
remains that all the rest of the stuff that goes with it, the Book Pilot
and so on, is not really usable for intensive, big book scanning. I have
a
slight feeling that I have been sold a pup, as they say, since I would
gladly have paid a bit more in the first instance for equipment with a
better OCR but did not realise the problem at the time.
Just thought those using this might like to know where I have got to,
and
if there are any further ideas, I would be most grateful.
John
