yes but where would I have got Abbyy Fine Reader Sprint? from the Epson
Printer or as part of Windows? I have of course Fine reader 8 with K11. Are
there any circumstances I would need Abbyy Sprint 6 incidentally how come
I had 6 if John Hull only got 5 with the Optica from Plus net. I am still
a bit baffled. Incidentally may I ask which voices do your reading Steve?
In K11 I found 2 Belters Emily and Danial when I say powerful I mean just
that. and very English as well. Since I know you use Wineyes what is the
speech like Steve? Only curious

Steve I appear to have Abbyy Fine Reader version 6 sprint on both laptop
and desktop
I do not have Optica as explained. However I do have an Epson Scanner
3490
is that where it came from. It goes on about 'creativity suites and a
huge
menu. I do not think my old Scanner Epson Perfection 1652 had that. I
have
not known what to do with it.. are there any circumstances under which I
may
need it? If for some reason Kurzweill11 went on strike? I had a fright
yesterday I was experimenting with Voices and found a very strong voice
called Emily a figure of 22 Hertz after her name, she literally yelled
at
me swamping poor Kate. fiddled some more and a Danial popped up also a
belter! I found a whispering voice all most fascinating. then I lost all
speech in Kurzweil completely.
I turned all off, and on at intervals. Kurzweil loaded up and said as
normal last Document not saved I scanned and waited no word not a squeak.
I
then remembered K.11 has a Scan in word facility. Yes there is a problem
a
runntime Dialogue but if you can see or guess which way you put the paper
in you can outwit that. it is the rotation that causes it. Late last
night
for no reason all was normal again. I cannot explain this but often
turning
all equipment off and forgetting for a while seems to cure many problems.
I
expect that happens to other people not just me.

Hi Dorothy,
Sprint is just a cut down version of Fine Reader. It comes on the
Opticbook CD, but if you install the drivers directly from their
download site, you can totally ignore it as I did. I assume that John
installed from the CD, and hence installed Sprint, at which point, it
took over.

Hi John,
It is perfectly possible to replace it, simply uninstall Sprint. it
is not part of the scanner at all. I never even installed it, and
Finereader 8 is working fine for me without the additional keystrokes.
I simply installed the drivers and ignored the Opticbook CD
altogether.

Dear List Members,
Thanks to all who gave me useful tips on the use of Opticbook3600 as
a book scanner. I have made some progress and am reporting for those
interested.
It is true that ABBYY Fine Reader 8.0 is very much better than ABBYY
Sprint 5.0. It does a lovely job and reads pages that version 5.0
scrambles.
However, it is not possible to replace version 5.0, which is embedded
in the Opticbook scanner. I have to operate the process through ABBYY
8.0, and only use Opticbook as the scanning device. This requires a
couple of additional key strokes, but it works.
There is a later version of Opticbook entitled Plustek Book Reader
v.100 but on the Plustek website, it does not disclose the identity
of the OCR device.
Enquiry discovers that it is only versionSprint 5.0, so it is no
better, and not surprising that they did not want to publicise the
fact that the OCR on their latest model is no better.
The upshot is that I will be able to scan and read books but I am
left with a rather expensive scanner, the only advantage of which is
the book edge.
This is, of course, a not inconsiderable advantage, but the fact
remains that all the rest of the stuff that goes with it, the Book
Pilot and so on, is not really usable for intensive, big book
scanning. I have a slight feeling that I have been sold a pup, as
they say, since I would gladly have paid a bit more in the first
instance for equipment with a better OCR but did not realise the
problem at the time.
Just thought those using this might like to know where I have got to,
and if there are any further ideas, I would be most grateful.
John
