[bcab] help with formatting an external drive

The HDD on my lap top went caput a couple of weeks ago - possibly only a
registry error though.
I have replaced it and have put the old one into an I D E to U S B converter
and been able to retrieve all the data from it.
I now have two problems:
Q1: when trying to format the drive through the command prompt, I am asked
for a volume label. Several attempted answers have come up with an error
message saying that it is invalid. What should I enter?
Q2: I have managed to retrieve a .pst file from which I would like to
extract some information.
How do I achieve this with Microsoft Outlook on the new configuration?
TIA
David
