Hi Alexander,
It is worth checking whether your printer cable is designed to plug in
to a serial or lpt port.
Older printers may have used the RS232 port while most printers produced
immediately prior to USB used the lpt port.
An RS232 cable usually had a female plub while lpt cables usually had a
male plub.
If your cable is in fact designed for an lpt port, you will need a
different converter.
If memory serves, the lpt specification is 1284.

Subject: [bcab] help needed obtaining a serial to USB connectivity cable
Hi all,
I am wanting to connect my Canon BJC85 printer to my .
However, the printer cable has a serial connection for which
I have a cable, but the cable ends in a Mail socket and my
computer does not have any serial ports, (all ports on this
machine are USB), so I am wondering if anyone can give me
any advice on where I might be able to obtain a cable with a
female serial socket at one end and the correct connection
for a USB port at the other.
Thank you in advance for any help, although I would like to
apologise to the moderators of both the lists to which I am
sending this message, as, although I am not cross posting
this message, I am intending to send it to both the BCAB and
Access-uk lists in order to obtain advice from as many
people as possible.
Alexander Shannon
