[bcab] Re: help! dead computer

Thanks Paddy, I am fearing the worst as well, but I don't think it could
have been a power surge as other computers were running at the time.  It
also didn't crash, it just failed to turn on.  I suppose the power supply
could have done something nasty when it failed.  But I don't understand why
the CD and DVD drives won't show any sign of life, when they receive power
direct from the power supply, not via the mother board (unlike the hard
drive)

I thought I should justify my comments about not investing any more money in

the machine.

If you were to tear down the system and rebuild it with a new motherboard , 
then assuming all the other parts were good you would run a 50-50 chance of 
dammaging your processer or heatsink during the sergery.  The bord would 
cost 1 third to 1 half the price of a new low end computer, and the 
operation would take 2-5 hours worth of work.  Then at the end of the day, 
there would be no guarantee that the same serge that took the old ps and 
bord didn't also get hard drives, optical drives, ram, and case wiring.

Get the drives out and get the data off them if not already backed-up on 
other media.
