I thought I should justify my comments about not investing any more money in the machine.
If you were to tear down the system and rebuild it with a new motherboard , then assuming all the other parts were good you would run a 50-50 chance of dammaging your processer or heatsink during the sergery. The bord would cost 1 third to 1 half the price of a new low end computer, and the operation would take 2-5 hours worth of work. Then at the end of the day, there would be no guarantee that the same serge that took the old ps and bord didn't also get hard drives, optical drives, ram, and case wiring.
Get the drives out and get the data off them if not already backed-up on other media.

It could be bord or processer or case or all of the above. I wouldn't continue investing money in the machine at this point, just strip it for parts, get whatever data you need and grab a new system.

Hi all, I wonder if anyone can shed light on my problem. I have an ATX midi 
tower which suddenly just stopped working, i.e. I switched it on and
absolutely nothing happened, not even a PSU fan.  I decided the PSU had
died, and have sourced another one which I installed.  This PSU powers
itself up, but nothing else works except the fan on the chip.  The CD and
DVD drives don't even have power to open.  So I have checked the power
supply cables, and they are all producing the correct voltage, so the new
PSU seems ok.
Any ideas welcomed!
