[bcab] Re: hal/supernova

Hi Joe.

I'm a bit of an evangelist for Supernova/Hal.

At the moment I only use version 6.53 as I've not got the cash to
update.
6.53 is useable on the web. You've got all the lists that you've got in
Jaws and some of the functionality. It's not quite as quick as Jaws to
navigate WebPages either. Having said that the version I'm using is
nearly 3 years old and I know there's been some considerable
improvements in the current version which is 8.3.

For non internet stuff I find Supernova/hal to be unbeatable in terms of
reliability, the amount of applications it works out of the box with and
the amount of information you can get out of it. Take an application I
use on a day to day basis. Enterprise Architect. This is a UML modelling
tool. It just works with supernova, (I have no useful vision so only use
speech). I can create and navigate diagrams and use about 90% of the
application with out needing to write any map files. As an experiment I
tried EA with jaws 7 and it didn't have a clue what was going on, It
didn't recognise menu bars or any of the controls on the screen. Frankly
it was pathetic. I asked someone who does jaws scripting how long it
would take to script EA and they thought at leased a week of full time
work. This is an example of just how good the window interaction and
detection system is in Supernova/Hal.

I'm a software developer and I really don't think I could do my job half
as well as I do using a different screen reader.

I wouldn't mind trying out window eyes as from what I here it's better
than jaws on the web and just as good as Hal with office and email. I
here it's not as good with more unusual applications and development
environments.

Cheers.
Nick.

Morning all.

I would like to hear from hal or supernova users to try and establish
how effective these screen readers are specifically on the world wide
web. Which version of IE, and or firefox work best with
hal/supernova. Are their sites which pose access issues which can be
successfully accessed using other access technologies?

Rather than burden the list with this, perhapse you might e-mail me
off list i'll leav it up to you.

Many thanks,

Joe Paton
