Hi Steve.
I can verify that this has worked as Ian and I have described since
version 3 of hal write up to version 8, and if it doesn't work on
version 9 you'll be able to knock me over with a feather.
Cheers.
Nick.

Hi Catherine,
Thanks for your corroboration. :)
But you don't even need to hit space on the first file.
As soon as you've arrowed to the first file you are interested in, hold
down
control and arrow to the next file you want, then hit space, continue to
hold down control and arrow to the next file, hit space, and so on.
As soon as you've selected all the files you require, release control
and
activate the action you require, e.g. move, copy, delete, or whatever.
As you say, there is no conflict ... Only in Steve's mind. ;)
No hard feelings meant Steve. :) Only ensuring that correct information
is
disseminated.
Kind regards, Ian.

Hi,
I haven't done this with Hal running lately but used to, and the way
I've
always selected files (with Hal and JAWS) is arrow to the first one I
want
and press space; then hold control while arrowing to the next one I
want,
release and press space again and so on until I get all I want. Hal
didn't
interfere with this when I used it and from what people are saying here
it
doesn't now. So it seems there are two ways of selecting multiple
files
using the keyboard, one of which Hal interferes with and one it doesn't.
I
wouldn't call this a conflict.

You don't need to release control at all. You just continue to hold
down control and press space for the subsequent files you require.

Hi Nick,
What rubbish. No conflict? If you press control-space when Hal is
not running, then Windows will select a file non-contiguously. This
is a known shortcut in Windows. With Hal running, it brings up the
Hal control panel. So how is that not a conflict? Stop defending it,
it is definitely the fourth best screen reader of a pile.
Window-Eyes, JAWS, System Access, then Hal. Actually though, there is
a workaround for this Hal stupidity, just select the file you want
with control held down, release it, then press space, then immediately
press control again to select more files.
All the best

Subject: [bcab] Re: hal/supernova
Hi Leon.
As I said to Steve the learning curve on Hal is quite steep. The
reason for this is that HAL is incredibly powerful. As to your points
I can only guess the reasons but: For the search feature in IE for
Hal, one of the HAL principles is that there should be a clear
difference between the functionality provided by the screen reader and
that provided by the application being used. If HAL was to take over
the control F key word like Jaws does this would actually be modifying
the way the application (IE) behaved. And actually the heading keys
are logical in terms of the Hal Set. The keyboard short cuts are
designed for normal keyboards in terms of the six pack of keys being
ins, home and pg up on the top of the six pac and del, end and pg down
on the bottom. With this in mind dolphin modifier and ins and del do
make a strange sort of sense. In terms of the control space
combination there is know conflict. its another example of Hal letting
windows do its thing. If you were using a mouse you would highlight a
file by single clicking and then holding control and single clicking
the next item you want to select. This is exactly how Windows does
keyboard multi selecting, (Use the arrows to find the first file you
want to select, hold control and move to the next and then hit space
to do the select.) The control space combination to bring up the
dolphin control panel has to be pushed in sequence control and then
space with out any other keys in-between. If that courses a problem
then it could always be changed from the control panel..
As to having the manual while doing the course, Because of Hals
learning curve you really have to use Hal for a few weeks as your only
screen reader to truly understand the way it works in the same way you
have to do with jaws or window eyes, My guess is Hal isn't your main
screen reader so you've not had the experience of going up that
learning curve. I'd probably have the same problem if I was trying to
do some stuff in Window Eyes as I've never used it.
Cheers.

Subject: [bcab] Re: hal/supernova
Hi Nick, as someone who has taught classes to users of several
different screen reader programmes simultaneously, I actually found
that Hal was the least logical when it came to internet browsing. For
example, how can you compare the headings navigation, in both Jaws and
Windoweyes pressing H or Shift H, takes you to the next or previous
available heading, whereas in Hal it is Caps lock + delete for next
heading, or Caps lock + insert, for previous.
Also the page find, had me digging into the HAL manual. I don't
understand why any screen reader needs to add a "find on this page"
command of it's own when there is one already built in to internet
explorer. But at least when they do, for Jaws and Windoweyes CTRL F
for
find, then F3 for
find next, which are standard windows shortcuts, work. Whereas in
Hal
it is F3 to find, then F2 to
find previous or F4 to find next. Not only is that not standard to
Windows itself, but those
keystrokes actually clash with some native windows shortcuts, and my
Hal using student had a nightmare, compared to the Jaws and Wineyes
users doing a web page information finding exercise, as a result.
In fact there were several occasions when he had to use the bypass key
because of Hal shortcut & Windows shortcut clashes. For example, an
all time classic has to be the required shortcut
CTRL+Spacebar for the HAL control panel. CTRL+Spacebar is needed in
windows basic file management,
to select files from within a list!
Just relating some first hand experience here, but literally this guy
would not have not been able to complete his course, without my having
had a copy of the Hal manual on standby to look such things up.

Hi Steve.
I take your points, I will happily admit that Hal is the less advanced
of the 3 big players on the web. You also have a point that initially
Hals keystrokes aren't logical however once you get used to them they
actually make more sense. this is because many of the keystrokes are
common for all applications, (thinking custom ones here), This is one
of the things which annoys me about Jaws, each script writer picks
there keystrokes which then often aren't common across applications.
In terms of the focuses point, It's just a terminology thing. Live
focus is the same as PC in jaws, Virtual focus is equivalent to the
Jaws Focus and area virtual focus is just a way of the map writer
being able to restrict the virtual focus to a particular frame on the
screen. If you don't want to be restricted just hit control tab.
One of the points I often make about hal is that it's quite a steep
learning curve and really to truly start getting on with it and
understanding how it works you do need to spend a few weeks using it
as your only screen reader.
As for why I have supernova rather than hal, When my company were
pricing up the various options they wanted the flexibility encase
other VI people were employed. At some point I'm going to have to
convince them that it's time to upgrade.
Cheers.
Nick.

Hi Nick,
I don't know. I do know though that a friend of mine who was thinking
of upgrading to 8 from 7.03 was put off it by dolphin themselves, as
she didn't have Vista. So the improvements are really only any good
for Vista users I reckon. I have 7.03 of Hal, and it is pretty good,
but it still has major issues on the web, such as Flash pages.
Window-Eyes runs rings round it on the web.
I really don't like Hal's wacky keystrokes though, they bear no
semblance of logic. That's my biggest criticism of Hal. You also
still can't easily walk through multilevel headings with it on the
web. They are still pretty behind with basic screen reading on the
web certainly. It works reasonably well with Sage Line 50, which JAWS
won't really touch, but Window-Eyes works better than Hal with it,
even though Hal has a map for it, and Window-Eyes doesn't. Then
there's live focus, virtual focus, area virtual focus, and all that
cluttered up rubbish.
So although I know you are a fan of Hal/Supernova, I still can't share
your enthusiasm, even though I have it for training purposes.
Out of interest, how come you have Supernova, if you have no useful
vision? Wouldn't Hal do?
All the best
Steve

Jonathan Fisher, who you do know, as you helped him out as he is with
Demon, is about to get the new improved version of Hal, so he will
send you another message when he is up and running, apparently the new
version of Hal, is supposed to be better and it does support vista and
is better on the internet, making it easier for the end user. I hope

Hi Steve. I can verify that this has worked as Ian and I have described since version 3 of hal write up to version 8, and if it doesn't work on version 9 you'll be able to knock me over with a feather. Cheers. Hal didn't interfere with this when I used it and from what people are saying here it doesn't now. So it seems there are two ways of selecting multiple files using the keyboard, one of which Hal interferes with and one it doesn't. I wouldn't call this a conflict. No conflict? If you press control-space when Hal is not running, then Windows will select a file non-contiguously. This is a known shortcut in Windows. With Hal running, it brings up the Hal control panel. So how is that not a conflict? Stop defending it, it is definitely the fourth best screen reader of a pile. Window-Eyes, JAWS, System Access, then Hal. Actually though, there is
a workaround for this Hal stupidity, just select the file you want with control held down, release it, then press space, then immediately
press control again to select more files. All the best Steve -----Original Message----- From: bcab-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:bcab-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Nick.Adamson@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Wednesday 5 March 2008 12:53 To: bcab@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [bcab] Re: hal/supernova Hi Leon. As I said to Steve the learning curve on Hal is quite steep. The reason for this is that HAL is incredibly powerful. As to your points I can only guess the reasons but: For the search feature in IE for Hal, one of the HAL principles is that there should be a clear difference between the functionality provided by the screen reader and
that provided by the application being used. If HAL was to take over the control F key word like Jaws does this would actually be modifying
the way the application (IE) behaved. And actually the heading keys are logical in terms of the Hal Set. The keyboard short cuts are designed for normal keyboards in terms of the six pack of keys being ins, home and pg up on the top of the six pac and del, end and pg down
on the bottom. With this in mind dolphin modifier and ins and del do make a strange sort of sense. In terms of the control space combination there is know conflict. its another example of Hal letting
windows do its thing. If you were using a mouse you would highlight a file by single clicking and then holding control and single clicking the next item you want to select. This is exactly how Windows does keyboard multi selecting, (Use the arrows to find the first file you want to select, hold control and move to the next and then hit space to do the select.) The control space combination to bring up the dolphin control panel has to be pushed in sequence control and then space with out any other keys in-between. If that courses a problem then it could always be changed from the control panel.. As to having the manual while doing the course, Because of Hals learning curve you really have to use Hal for a few weeks as your only
screen reader to truly understand the way it works in the same way you
have to do with jaws or window eyes, My guess is Hal isn't your main screen reader so you've not had the experience of going up that learning curve. I'd probably have the same problem if I was trying to do some stuff in Window Eyes as I've never used it. Cheers. nick. -----Original Message----- From: bcab-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:bcab-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of editor@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: 05 March 2008 09:39 To: bcab@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [bcab] Re: hal/supernova Hi Nick, as someone who has taught classes to users of several different screen reader programmes simultaneously, I actually found that Hal was the least logical when it came to internet browsing. For example, how can you compare the headings navigation, in both Jaws and
Windoweyes pressing H or Shift H, takes you to the next or previous available heading, whereas in Hal it is Caps lock + delete for next heading, or Caps lock + insert, for previous. Also the page find, had me digging into the HAL manual. I don't understand why any screen reader needs to add a "find on this page" command of it's own when there is one already built in to internet explorer. But at least when they do, for Jaws and Windoweyes CTRL F for
find, then F3 for
find next, which are standard windows shortcuts, work. Whereas in
Hal
it is F3 to find, then F2 to find previous or F4 to find next. Not only is that not standard to Windows itself, but those keystrokes actually clash with some native windows shortcuts, and my Hal using student had a nightmare, compared to the Jaws and Wineyes users doing a web page information finding exercise, as a result. In fact there were several occasions when he had to use the bypass key
because of Hal shortcut & Windows shortcut clashes. For example, an all time classic has to be the required shortcut CTRL+Spacebar for the HAL control panel. CTRL+Spacebar is needed in windows basic file management, to select files from within a list! Just relating some first hand experience here, but literally this guy would not have not been able to complete his course, without my having
had a copy of the Hal manual on standby to look such things up. I take your points, I will happily admit that Hal is the less advanced
of the 3 big players on the web. You also have a point that initially Hals keystrokes aren't logical however once you get used to them they actually make more sense. this is because many of the keystrokes are common for all applications, (thinking custom ones here), This is one of the things which annoys me about Jaws, each script writer picks there keystrokes which then often aren't common across applications. In terms of the focuses point, It's just a terminology thing. Live focus is the same as PC in jaws, Virtual focus is equivalent to the Jaws Focus and area virtual focus is just a way of the map writer being able to restrict the virtual focus to a particular frame on the screen. If you don't want to be restricted just hit control tab. One of the points I often make about hal is that it's quite a steep learning curve and really to truly start getting on with it and understanding how it works you do need to spend a few weeks using it as your only screen reader. As for why I have supernova rather than hal, When my company were pricing up the various options they wanted the flexibility encase other VI people were employed. At some point I'm going to have to convince them that it's time to upgrade. Cheers. I do know though that a friend of mine who was thinking
of upgrading to 8 from 7.03 was put off it by dolphin themselves, as she didn't have Vista. So the improvements are really only any good for Vista users I reckon. I have 7.03 of Hal, and it is pretty good, but it still has major issues on the web, such as Flash pages. Window-Eyes runs rings round it on the web. I really don't like Hal's wacky keystrokes though, they bear no semblance of logic. That's my biggest criticism of Hal. You also still can't easily walk through multilevel headings with it on the web. They are still pretty behind with basic screen reading on the web certainly. It works reasonably well with Sage Line 50, which JAWS
won't really touch, but Window-Eyes works better than Hal with it, even though Hal has a map for it, and Window-Eyes doesn't. Then there's live focus, virtual focus, area virtual focus, and all that cluttered up rubbish. So although I know you are a fan of Hal/Supernova, I still can't share
your enthusiasm, even though I have it for training purposes. Out of interest, how come you have Supernova, if you have no useful vision? Wouldn't Hal do?
