[bcab] downloading files with internet explorer

Hi all. 
was looking at a friends PC this weekend who had a problem downloading files in 
internet explorer. 
on many web sites I tried, particularly with files over about 50MB long, I 
started to download the file and after about 2MB the file would stop 
downloading. 
if it is an mp3 file, then I get about a minute or so of audio or however much 
has downloaded.  if an exe file I get told the file is corrupt. 
I was using websites such as 
www.jfwlite.com
 or 
www.whitestick.co.uk
 that work fine here.  anyone else ever had this problem with Internet 
Explorer? 
The problem is sorted with a download manager but just was a bit worried about 
why it happens without one.
