Maybe I'm being thick and missing something or maybe this has already been
suggested and I've missed it but isn't the obvious solution to this problem,
which would also stump spammers, to provide an alternative which is not
detectable online on the site. What I mean is for example a telephone number
given on the site that could be rung by anyone unable to see the graphic. On
this number there could be a recorded message of the characters to be typed
in. The message would obviously change each minute or so like those
SeccureID tokens do and the web site capcha image and required response
would be synchronised with what is playing over the phone. For people with
hearing as well as sight loss, I'm sure whatever techniques they use now to
use the telephone could be employed. The idea of doing it this way means
very low cost as no one needs to be employed to pick up the phone. Any
solution has to be low cost to ensure maximum take-up by organisations on
their web sites
In fact, there is a market opportunity for someone to set up such a service
providing the telephone number and recorded audio versions of the capchas
which could be sold for a small charge to any organisation who want to
protect their web sites with capchas.
this is so obvious there must be a flaw in it and, if there is, I'm sure I
won't have to wait long for someone on this list to tell me what it is. I am
presuming here that Skype and other reputable organisations that provide
Internet connectivity to landline phone networks must have ways of blocking
numbers so that the spam software can't use them to dial the number and
somehow listen to the message that way.
If no one finds a flaw, perhaps this should go forward into WCAG or wherever
it can be best promoted as a way round the problem of capchas.
Regards,
Phil.
