[bcab] Re: Wish List

Nick - a couple of those are close.
A Camera I can point at things and get it to read it to me -
the latest addition to the magnilink cctv range does this, real time ocr and
read aloud of whatever you point the cctv camera at be it near or far. The
magni links plug-in to a laptop - it is of course at a price. About £2k for the
cctv plus another £2k for the tts ocr module. Of course targeting the board
would be an issue for a total.

A fully accessible drawing and diagramming tool.
A bit further away but the talking tactile tablet is a horizontal touch screen
which if you lay an existing tactile diagram on lets you assign textual tags to
areas of the diagram which are then read back when you review the diagram at a
later date. You can assign levels of information so that you get different
info according to how many times ou tap on a particular area. The touch
screen, authorware, and some sample diagrams including (I think) world atlas,
costs about £600. you'll just need to keep buying bar-coded swell paper as
this is how the screen assiciateds the diagram with the laptop stored content.
Coupled with a swell printer it gives you some of the functionality you asked
for. Or possibly using a thermal pen you can easily draw your own diagrams, the
quality of the raised images is less good but its fast and the pens cost around
£20 I think.

Hmm, now you've got me thinking. What would I like to see in terms of
technology.

A Car that blindnies can drive independently. Although I have a feeling that if
we tried it most other people would prefer to start taking the train.

A Camera I can point at things and get it to read it to me. Think how useful
that would be in presentations. Just point it at the PowerPoint screen at the
front and jobs a gooden.

Access systems which you don't have to get a second mortgage to bye.

A fully accessible drawing and diagramming tool for the blind which can be
linked to a plotter type device to tactile print the diagram and a pad which
can be drawn on which instantly puts up the item you've just drawn. A bit like
electronic germanphilm. You could then tap areas on the pad and then label up
diagrams in the place you tapped.

A job where I do nothing and get paid an extortionate wage, though as it looks
like footballers only get that privilege I think it'll never happen.

Cheers.
Nick.

Hi,

How about affordable digital TV with Audio Description, say £40! An accessible
DVD Recorder for around £150. Come to think of it, Jaws for £150 and ZoomText
for £100 would be good too.

Phil
