[bcab] Re: Why would messages be deleted from a folder when compacting in outlook Express 6?

Hi Alexander,

The reason for suggesting stopping using a system where
files have accidentally been deleted, is simply that the
longer you continue using it, the less likely you are able
to recover deleted files. To explain a little further (for
others' benefit too) when you delete files, the space left
can make the disk look like a piece of Swiss cheese with
small holes or spaces all over it. When the system receives
new information to store, such as files or messages, it will
use these small spaces first. This can sometimes then mean
that you may only be able to recover parts of files.

However, if your store of messages was merely messages from
various lists, then there is a good chance that you will be
able to get access to archived material. Freelists
certainly do keep archives, but I can't say for other list
software.

You can certainly view BCAB's archives by going to
http://www.freelists.org and selecting the browse archives
link, but I'm not sure if you can actually download a whole
batch of messages.

George.

Hi George and all,

George, thank you for your reply. I will have a look at the
link you have
given, but the problem is that although I do have access to
another laptop,
for various complex reasons, which I won't go into in detail
on list,
swapping everything to the other laptop and then back again
just for the
sake of some lost messages, would honestly be too much work.
Please can you
clarify, (off list if you prefer), if I have understood you
correctly, and
you are suggesting that I stop using my laptop for e-mail
until I have run
the utility you have provided the link for, or whether you
are suggesting
that I stop receiving messages from the BCAB list on this
machine until I
have looked into the link you have provided?

Also, based on the answer to the above question, is it
really worth my
looking at the link you have provided, if using a second PC
is going to be
more difficult than just letting those messages go?

The other question that comes to mind, (which is actually a
question for
someone like the BCAB list moderator), is the following.
Could I not
download messages from the BCAB list archives, and if so,
how can I go about
this?

Thank you in advance for any further replies.
