Hi Alan,

Having one set of keystrokes stifles creativity. I like competition in
screen readers. Does JAWS have the right keystrokes? Does Window-Eyes? Does
Hal? Who is to say. Keystrokes are very personal things, and at least the
main screen readers let you redefine them if you don't like them.

All the best

Steve

Hello Adrian
I agree with your sentiments. These developers are indeed doing a noble
job, but can I also add another comment which I think has already been
touched upon before. I like others, love to try these new products, but I
usually give up before fully testing them because it means learning another
new set of key strokes. If only there was just one standard set of key
stroke commands for all of them, we could do a thorough comparison much
easier.
cheers

HI Yeliz:
All this backward and forward comparison of NVDA, SA to go, WebAnywhere,
Firevox, and others is rather my point. They have lots in common and each a minor difference all making it very difficult to differentiate between them
- which one best suits me and my particular requirements?

If as many as possible, especially the open source projects, could
collaborate we might have one tool that was more cable than any of the 2 or
3 different ones. Seems to me that NVDA and WebAnywhere have but a lot of
effert in to creating lots of the same things. If one had learned from the
other we might have a free, open source, portable screenreader, that could
also be run from the Web and be used to access Web and local resources and
work in popular productivity applications. Instead we have two similar
products with I suspect many drawbacks in common.

And while I'm sure the motives behind WebAnywhere are commendable and all
the individuals involved inspirational, hardworking and generally good eggs I can't say I'm surprised. Products from academic institutions usually exist
because of a funding opportunity which doesn't allow for building on what
already exists. Time and Budget mean you have to start from scratch and
finish with a deliverable rather than demonstrating contribution to an
ongoing larger piece of work.

Is WebAnywhere a useful and valuable project - very probably, Will the
product be in regular use by VI people in 12 months time - I suspect not but
lets hope I'm wrong.

Hi Adrian,

Compared to others, to use Webanywhere the user does not need to install any
special software, the user can just use a conventional browser such as
Firefox and IE. You can access the Web from any computer without installing
any application. There might be cases where the user does not have write
permissions to install application on a computer or the user does not have
an application in a stick or on a CD, for example libraries, etc.

And Webanywhere is open source:

Yeliz.
