Hi. This could be the problem but I wonder if some of the CDs you are
trying to play are copy protected? Will they play on your PC?

Hello Susan
Commercial CDs are usually pressed - low-volume CDs are 'burnt' by using a
low-power laser to penetrate a dye-layer. I've known many instances where
burnt CDs play on some players and not on others, probably due to
manufacturing differences in batches of CDs.
However, I've never come across a situation where stamped CDs will sometimes
play, sometimes not, on a piece of kit. It sounds a bit worrying on a new
machine - suggest you get a replacement as it sounds as though the laser
head assembly is on the edge of specification.
