[bcab] Re: Update for I.E.7 Glyche

Hi Dorothy

I would keep updates as simple as possible. It can be set up on your
computer using 'control panel' assuming you are running XP.

In control panel there are two items.

Automatic updates

This window will let you set up to receive and install updates. The first
radio button check is an invitation to download and install updates
automatically.
This is the simplest way but there is no warning as to what is being
installed. As many people found recently, part of the auto download was to
install IE7 which had consequences for their screen readers.

The next button is the one I would use. It says.

Download updates for me but let me choose when to install them.

Updates are usually once a month around the 10th and once sownloaded a
warning appears. This allows you to review the available updates and to
choose the ones you want. In most cases you only need to install the most
critical updates which are indicated.
There may be other optional up dates for drivers and perhaps Windows Media
player which you can take if you want, but I would stick to the critical
ones.

The second item in control panel is

Security centre.

There are three items on this page.

The first is 'Firewall' which should be set to ON

The second is 'Automatic update' which should show you what you have set up
in the automatic update window previously.

The third item is 'Virus protection which should be set to on. This is in
addition to your own anti virus software.

I am not a Jaws users so I hope the above makes sense. I use Zoomtext with
screen reader and I had to download an update before using IE7. Its fine
now.

Kind regards

Charles Crisp

thank you Charles. Since the Computeractive thought it was important the
fix or download I thought so too. I know several friends not Vip who could
not cope with I.E.7 and took it off. Additionally reading this list I read
quite a few posts to the effect they had not only removed it but taken off
Jaws 8. Oddly enough I downloaded I.E 7 before putting on Jaws 8 and did not

have problems. Of course I do not do anything fancy on the Web I am not good

enough. Re updates on my laptop it said "windows updates turned on" it did
not on desktop. I went into Microsoft and found a huge Website with a
large amount of things all to benefit my computer Overwhelmed by this huge
shopping list I chose basic and at some point I was offered a print out of
my updates. It appears to be a list of all the updates I have had in some
months.. Anyway I think it is Ok. In the computer asked me to choose a time
to receive updates. I tried typing in a time but that part did not seem to
work.Should I simply for example type ten pm or 10.pm or does it not
matter, can I type anytime? Sorry to sound dumb but it would be helpful to
know what others do Dorothy Ps I have writen time in this Email in letters

and numbers for anyone who cannot see at all.
