[bcab] Re: USING GUIDE WITH PAYPAL

Hello Isaac

Many thanks for that. It just goes to show you should stick to a decent
screenreader if you already have one.

Hello Wendy

My understanding is that Guide is a self contained program - it does not
interact with Windows programs like a screen reader does.

Webbie - the web browser and the excellent range of accessible applications
are windows programs which require a screen reader - not accessible from
Guide.

Isaac

Tim

I have no real experience of Guide, but I think the combination of Guide and
Webbie would probably be ok for novice users who don't want the huge
learning curve involved in mastering one of the big screenreaders.

I would be interested to know from any HAL users whether HAL does work with
XP.

Hi Wendy and All,

Before we drop the subject I wanted to clear up some confusion on my part.
My mother uses Guide, purchased as far as I remember some time last year.
It does have built in web browsing, which to me appears to work pretty well.
It has 2 separate modes of browsing, text only, and full web pages. I
haven't tried to do anything very complex with it, and certainly not
anything as advanced as internet shopping, but this version of Guide didn't
require the installation of Webbie in order to permit web browsing (though
its possible this happens transparently "under the hood".

I agree that it isn't a replacement for a fully fledged screen reader where
this is what's required, but for the target market, it appears to me to do a
prettty good job.

Regards,

Tim Pennick
