I've got an Ion Tape2PC and use it with XP all the time with no problems. It
came with audacity,
however you can use any audio editor once you have transcribed using it.
As it is a USB device, when first installing it takes over as the primary sound
device in the PC
after the first reboot, this could cause loss of sound from your PC and thus
your screen reader
temporarily. However to get around this you can disconnect it after
rebooting, to make your
soundcard the default device again under the "audio" page, before re-connecting
it. Then go into
"control panel, sounds & audio devices" and set your soundcard to the default
before reconnecting
it. The ION will then co-exist quite happily as the second sound device.
Audacity seems pretty good to me, with basic editing audio file navigation, and
filtering all
keyboard accessible. There are some help files around for it for blind users.
And in particular
David Bailes's one for Jaws users is very good, at
http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Audacity-1.3.4-Guide.html
I must say that there seems to be no better quality from using this USB tape
deck than there would
be from using a normal stereo line input. The quality of the audio on the
original tape you are
transcribing, plays a very big part in this, of course.
A Happy New Year 2009 to all.

Dean,
Kevin Morris, who contributes to this list, has purchased the Ion Tape2PC
and from what I recall him saying that the unit and software caused a
problem with Vista but everything went smoothly when he switched to XP. I'm
sure Kevin will respond to this thread when he comes across it. I fully
intend to purchase the Ion in the New Year when funds permit.

The Ion Tape2PC USB deck comes with Ordacity for the PC and Mac and
also EZ Tape recording software for PC only. I know Ordacity for the
PC is accessible but I've never tried it to know how good it is. The
question is is EZ Tape accessible? I doubt there'll be any
accessibility issues with the hardware as you just plug it in without
even needing to install drivers.
It may be helpful to try to find blind users of EZ Tape to see if it
is accessible. Either way Ordacity is accessible and users of that
can tell you how it stands on quality and usability.
Just my thoughts
Dean
