[bcab] Re: URGENT - ATTENTION EVERYONE

Perhaps I shouldn't say this, but I'm very glad that this is the case. There
are many occasions on which I've got stuck either with a piece of musical
equipment or a piece of software, and been very glad to browse relevant forums.

  Eleanor,

It is common practice for mailing lists such as these to have publically
available archives. As open forums, anyone is able to join, so information is
not protected.

Some lists do protect their information, but that is by no means a
standard feature. Such lists will usually ask you to create a username and
password when you subscribe to the list.

I'm afraid there are no guidelines or rules that govern this approach. It
is simply the commonly understood way of things on the Internet.

Generally speaking though, the responsibility for what gets posted lies
with the sender. Information posted to a public forum should be considered
available within the public domain.

I hope this won't prevent you participating on the BCAB list and others
like it. The fact that it's a public forum open to people outside of BCAB is
one of its strengths.

  Léonie.

I was searching for information on Google regarding Open university course
W300 which I am currently studyng and horror of horrors my search brought me to
this link. http://www.freelists.org/post/bcab/Fw-The-Open-University-OnLine,23
This is BCAB communication between myself and other members on the list. i
had no idea that this was then posted on Google for the WORLD at large to read.
Can someone direct me to the rules which state that such information of a
fairly sensative issue gets posted on-line. True I made my feelings known
through BCAB and I was aware that I was communicating with a group of visually
impaired computer users but oh dear me, I did not know that 5 months on, I
could read all this through Google. I am a member of the Talks list for the
blind and in order to read Archieve material there I have to put in my username
and password. That at least confines the information to the list members.

  Yours

  Eleanor
