Hi David, my advice is to either 1. do separate desktop shortcuts to each
connection on the same
log-in, or even better, 2. to create a separate log in entirely for the work
location.
Re: the first method, two connections on one log-in, it might be fine however
there are some
potential pitfalls. Will the same network adapter be used in both locations?
E g is it an Ethernet
adapter connection at work, as well as at home? If so and they are using the
same adapter yet each
connection requires different protocols/settings, that could genuinely cause
problems. However if
they are using different adapters, e.g. a USB ADSL modem at home, and an
ethernet connection at
work, you will have less problems in that area.
However theres more to consider, e g you will probably have different firewall
specific settings at
each location. You also may need different web browser and email settings in
each location,
especially if they use a proxy server or MS exchange server at work. Therefore
it is possible that
setting up a second user account login for work, might be best.
Even though it is difficult (nigh impossible?) to have speech working at the
Windows XP login
screen, nonetheless the number of tab key presses & down arrow keypresses
needed before pressing
enter, to log in to a particular ID from a list when there are several, can
easily be worked out.
E.g. Typically "tab twice, down arrow once, enter".
The advantages to doing different log in user accounts for work and home are
that, they can be
tailored separately. 1. You would be able to protect the privacy of your
personal files, from
people with access to your workplace computer network, so it is more secure.
2. You can have custom
start up options for each separate User account too, so if for example Citrix
or Novell are used at
work, the necessary client for either could be put into the Workplace account
startup only. 3.
The browser and email settings required for work could also be set in the
workplace account only, to
load automatically.
The major software installed on the machine would be available on both log-ins,
and you could make
use of the "shared folder" facility or even use custom shortcuts, to provide
easy access between
folders on the different accounts' desktops. Once you've mastered logging in
to each account at
will, and account switching, you may even like the idea of complete separate
desktops for whether
you're at work or home.
Anyway just some food for thought, I hope it's helpful. But also bear in mind
Barry T could be
absolutely right in his much shorter reply!...
Good luck & all the best - Leon Gilbert.

Subject: [bcab] Two broad band connections on one machine
Hi all:
My lap top is configured for my work network, but I have a
requirement for it to be my main machine on my new home
broad band facility.
Can I expect any conflicts?
Any advice and pit falls welcomed!
