[bcab] Re: Thunder Screen Reader

Thunder is free and still, I suppose, in an early version, so given all that it isn't a bad effort. I come across people whho are a bit resistant to using speech on their PCs because they think it's going to be fearfully complicated, or it's an alien way of working. At least with Thunder, they may be pleasantly surprised.

It's not JAWS, for sure, but it's also a lot more realistic than those programs that just read Word documents or selected text, which I presume must not be aimed at people with serious visual impairments.

It has some eccentricities such as going on strike when you least expect it, and for some reason this often happens when I've been using Notepad of all things. Also, I don't know why it has its own strange pronunciations for the word "shortcut" such as "short cutey" ! or "shortkunk".

Sometimes I run Thunder and Narrator together, and as the programs often speak different items, doing this can be useful.

I'm no fonder than Nigel is of those Caps-lock combinations, and there they are again in Thunder - I'm not sure sometimes whether I've done something wrong or whether the program isn't responding.

These are minor concerns, however, when everyone can now have a talking computer if they want one.

Hi Francis.

I tried Thunder some time ago and could not get it to work first time.

After contacting them and some exchanges I had to download a sample of the
'Daniel' speech engine to get some speech.

I run Zoomtext Neospeech and there seemed to be some conflict. Thunder kept crashing and I never got to grips with it. It's something to do with 'sappy
5'.

If your machine is clean, then you may have better luck.

Kind regards

Charles Crisp
