[bcab] Re: The gen on the IE7 automatic update

Going back to a point made in an earlier post about frequency of updates, FS
have a private beta team that are available and are able to respond somewhat
faster and more knowledgeably than say in a public beta cycle. Also some of
the fixes can be quite small but useful and therefore quite easy to test. Jaws
is quite modular in the way it is constructed and a change can be made either
by a developer, or even a knowledgeable user that makes a useful difference
without having to recompile or adjust the whole lot. Indeed there is a finite
amount of change in terms of actual file size that one can make in such an
update.

I will stick out my neck here (a risky thing to do in the bear pit of public
mail lists)and say that given the close running of Jaws 7.10 and 8.0 cycles and
the importance of IE7 as an update, it is quite probable that 7.10 will be
patched again specifically in respect of IE7. Such things are not without
precedant, there was a similar occurrance with Jaws 4.51 which got patched off
the back of Jaws 5.0 cycle with regard to some speed isues. Having said this,
such events may, due to necessities of development resources, be quite rare and
also because such fixes cannot for technical reasons be floated into every past
version.

  Hello

Reading Tristram response, is it all a storm in a tea cup?

Please note that like many people on this list I grind my teeth with
frustration each time I have to invest money in a new version of JAWS which
usually does little to improve my daily interaction with my computer.

On the other hand, version 7 has been now out for a while and 7.1 is
available as a free download to those who have 7.0. I don't think that one
would expect Freedom Scientific to retrofit all previous versions to cope with
a major release like IE7 (it is probably not just a matter of scripts). Users
do not have, as described in a previous email on this list to upgrade to IE7 if
they do not wish to do so. FS should fix however any remaining glitches with a
7.2 free release if necessary.

Please note that I do not refer in this email to any screenreader wars, just
to JAWS.

  Regards

  Isaac

Jaws 7.10 is free to all Jaws 7.0 users and will work with IE7 already
pre-dating Dolphin's retro-fit. There are some minor key cleash problems but
these can be resolved as and where they occur if need be. There have actually
been positive user positings on the Jaws-UK mail list with regard to this.

Jaws 7.10 can be downloaded from:

I don't suppose it will happen but it would be good if Freedom Scientific
produced scripts for JFW users earlier than JAWS 7 to download so that we could
run the new version of Internet Explorer. If Dolphin can do it, surely Freedom
Scientific can also. I can understand the need for installing a higher version
of JAWS when Vista comes along but Internet Explorer isn't a new operating
system, it is a key part of most people's computer use and it would be an
indication to JAWS users that Freedom Scientific really care about their
customers.

      Hi,

Here is information I have gathered from speaking to MS personell
regarding the IE7 update on Wednesday:

      1. The update is delivered through automatic updates, but you are given
the option to install it or to stop the installation - only users in the
administrators group will have the option of installation.

      2. If you are in a company and they use the automatic update server like
I do at work, the update is delivered in the rollup category, which we don't
subscribe to anyway.

      3. There is a block tool available to stop IE being downloaded if you are
really paranoid (its basically for administrators who don't use WSUS and don't
have control over their users) available at:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=4516A6F7-5D44-482B-9DBD-869B4A90159C&displaylang=en

I recommend that JFW users just say no to the installation screen, do not
disable automatic updates as you wouldn't get other critical updates downloaded
- once you say no, you won't be prompted again - you will manually download the
update as and when a fix to JFW is available.

FWIW here at work there are other products that don't work with IE7,
relating to BACS/DD submissions over HTTP etc, so we won't be rolling it out
yet.

      Andrew.
