[bcab] Re: Tesco again

Chris,

Could you please give me some further details around this and possibly put
some of the trainers etc in touch with me?

I am a totally blind analyst, working on a Debit Card SecureCode Project
which will impact Clydesdale Bank and Yorkshire Bank customers. We will be
trying to have everything set up by mid 2008.

I use JAWS and have no vision at all for looking at screens. We have a
requirement, within our project, to ensure that all screens meet
accessible standards and do not result in DDA issues. It is proposed that
Mastercard will be hosting our SecureCode solution and that is what
worries me. I have been pressing Mastercard to let me have a look at their
Securecode screens, from a blindness perspective and hope to have such
access in the New Year. I am interested to know if Tesco are using a
Mastercard hosted site also, since, if they are and visually challenged
people are already having issues with this, we might have an impact on our
project also, if the same hosted technologies are being used.

Securecode is a mechanism where people, making purchases on the internet
with some merchants, are asked to input their Securecode password, by
means of verifying their identity. Think of it in the same way as people
who key in their Chip and Pin Number when they are shopping in physical
stores.

The Securecode service relies on two things. If the merchant, e.g. Tesco,
is not enabled, no Securecode requests will be made to customers. If the
merchant is enabled, the customer may be asked to register for Securecode,
whereby, they enter their card details and create a Securecode password
and usually a personalised Greeting message. When they subsequently
encounter Securecode when shopping on the internet, the greeting message
is displayed to assure them that the site is secure and no-one is
"fishing" for their details.

Some banks allow customers to defer registration a number of times and
others force registration as soon as there is a need to use the service.

Many credit card issuers have already joined the Securecode scheme,
however, some debit card issuers are still to join and that is what I am
currently working on for our organisation.

Some banks will have created their own Securecode interface, whereas,
others use a hosted solution, such as Mastercard or Visa. The screen
concerned appears as a pop-up window and this is where some screen readers
have issues with it.

If I can get as much detail as possible on the below, I can look into
reasons why these folks have been affected. The usual thing, in the
sighted world, is to make things as pleasing to look at as possible and
even some of the big players do not think about accessibility issues early
enough.

I look forward to hearing from you.

With Kind Regards,

[bcab] Tesco again

Hi folks,

A colleague in another arena has tabled the following problem whilst
helping
to train VI people to shop on line with Tesco. Can anyone offer advice
please as I am seeing her at a meeting next week.

Chris.

Online shopping. At Berkshire Blind Society we ran a project to teach VI
people how to online shop on Tesco's website. It was excellent until
checkout. After inputting credit card details, the participants were taken
to a new screen and asked for their securecode password. This is a new
security process taken up by some retailers and banks. The screen for
input
did not work with Jaws and the shoppers could not pay for their goods. We
have subsequently got around this with the help of a sighted trainer...but
I
have been unable to find a contact in the banking arena willing to discuss
the issue.
