BookShare is an American organisation that converts printed books to
electronic format and puts them onto the web for subscribers to download.
The main site is not available outside of the USA. I believe they do have a
European site with a selection of English and Spanish titles available which
you could subscribe to. These are titles for which they have negotiated the
rights to convert with the publishers.

BookShare titles are available in Daisy 3 format as well as other formats.

Daisy stands for Digital Audio Information SYstem and is a specification or
standard for presenting electronic books for VI use. There are 2 ditinct
versions, Daisy 2.02 and Daisy 3. Europe mainly uses Daisy 2.02 and the USA
(particularly BookShare) use Daisy 3, but in the interests of simplicity
they call it either Daisy 1 or NISO!

The idea about Daisy is that you tie audio (such as an MP3 file) to the text
and have a player that can read the text and play the audio in time to it.
If the listener then wants to skip to the next page, or paragraph, or
chapter, they can do so by telling the player which finds that place in the
text and starts playing the linked audio.

The audio could be synthetic speech, or recorded human speech. The RNIB use
Daisy for their Talking Book service.
