[bcab] Re: Soneil Info Anyone?

Hi,

The Smalltalk looks very worthwhile. if you have a copy of WindowEyes already,
the cost is £1,500, and they give you a 3 count SMA with that also.

You can install what you want on it, however, even Jaws, and there are Linux
drivers available (!!!).

Andrew.

Many Thanks to all for info on this thread. Looks like the SmallTalk
might be well worth some investigation.

Regards,

Tim

The Smalltalk Ultra is a tiny PC which is sold with Window-Eyes
installed, but you can buy the PC as standard without Window-Eyes.
Steve Nutt should be able to tell you more. I haven't seen it, but I'm
told its tiny.

Hi,

My interest in the Soneil product stems from the fact that it is
envisaged as a fully fledged XP machine. I'm after something I can use
to connect to my employer's corporate intranet, and so far, I can't
track down a PDA that can run the combination of VPN software, and
automatic token generation which is necessary for me to do this
remotely. The only alternative I'm aware of would be a lap-top with a
braille display which is a bit bulky.

Regards,

Tim

there are already Braillenote, PacMATE AND Braille Sense on the market.
one has to wonder if there is really room for another player?

Most people are agreed I think that as the commercial PDA platforms
become more powerful and stable, these are likely to form the basis of
notetakers for visually impaired people in the future, even if companies
such as Humanware continues to develop programs like Keysoft for these
kind of devices in order to get productivity aimed at visually impaired
people combined with the relatively low price of a notetaker.

Cheers

I saw the unit; it's a prototype and talk of prices and suppliers is a
bit premature. They're hoping to start production in September, but even
that isn't fixed yet. They still have to do some serious work on it -
the bloke said the idea is to get something with the power of Windows XP
(so that there's no messing about with pocket versions of Office and you
would be able to connect via USB and transfer material directly to a PC
without ActiveSync), but with the alternative of a quick-boot system
like some of the non-Windows notetakers if you just needed to make a
quick note or look up an email. The quick boot system is planned to be
Linux, and the tricky bit is going to be getting the quick boot system
able to pull information out of Windows XP applications - something
like, presumably, Outlook.

If they can do it, it sounds really good - but I'm not certain they will
be able to do it. The unit they were showing was incredibly light, as
all it really is is a few cards inside a box.

Hi All,

I was unable to attend sight village, and wondered if anyone's got any
more news on the launch of the new machines from Soneil.

A browse around Google yields some interesting, and in some cases
conflicting information, and their website still seems a bit lacking in
details (http://www.soneilves.com/ <http://www.soneilves.com/> ).

The info I've got so far is that there is to be a 40 and 20 cell Braille
version, possibly with at least one of these models being dual boot
possibly to Linux/XP Pro.

What I'm really after is a price, and any news of a UK distributor,
though I'd also be grateful for any reviews if anyone got to have a go
at Sight Village.

Regards and thanks for any info.

Tim Pennick
