Many thanks Tristram and Stuart,
It looks as though the Migrate Easy software from Acronis will do
just what I need. I'll report back when I've tried it.
My faith in this great list is restored.
Best,
Peter

actually a small thread on this the JAWS-UK list. I will forward you
some of the details of that seperately but the application mentioned was
Acronis True Image version 11. I haven't used it myself although it is
similar to Ghost and a number of others, I think Acronis in common with
some other modern ones can take an image of a machine that is actually
still running. I believe whilst the interface is not perfect and some
use of JAWS cursor or equivolent may be necessary it is possible. The
real proof is restoring the machine back from the image, again I have no
direct experience of this but it probably uses a partition to act as a
time capsule (if you have the space). Or you can put your backup onto
CDs or external drive which will have accessibility implications.
You can go to:

Subject: [bcab] Software help
Hi All,
For the first time ever in living memory, a question to the list has
gone entirely unanswered for a whole day. I thought maybe the
subject-line might have looked uninteresting, so have changed it in
hopes that somebody might have some thoughts.
My main question is: what is the best software to use to make an
image of a hard disk, in order to keep all system files, registry and
so-on intact? The one I know about is Norton Ghost, but I remember
there were doubts about accessibility, so any other contenders?
As a supplementary point I really need it to run under Windows 98, so
would either need 98 support, or an older version.
Can anyone help with this please?? Pretty please???
Best,
Peter
