I haven't looked into it to figure out precisely why I had this trouble, but I remember when I last used that site the only way I found to add items to the basket using JAWS was to turn off the virtual cursor with ins z. Can't remember what specfically after that, but hopefully that'll get you started. I just remember I'd find the item I wanted to buy with the virtual cursor on, then turn it off to add to the basket by pressing enter on something, not using any of the mouse simulation keystrokes.

Hi vince. this is all v helpful so thank you for it. I feel slightly better about myself if you actually had to use the mouse to achieve purchases. It would be interesting as you say if any expert JAWS users here had an opinion as to whether the site is usable just from the keyboard.

Tim, this is all pretty tricky, and I was literally using the mouse to get the result. Now, I don't know enough about Jaws to say how you simulate left-click followed by a delay then left button release. Looking at the code, there are onmousedown, onmouseup and onclick commands for each item, and while this might be quite clever for anyone with a bit of sight, I can see the problem for everyone else, but don't honestly know the answer.
Items are in tables, which I guess is another fun feature. Each row has 3 items going from left to right. Each table cell has a picture of the item at the top with a buried link, which is the issue we're talking about. Underneath the picture there's a text link that takes you to more info about the item. Underneath that is the price in plain text, then underneath that is another row with the quantity as a text form field and a button labelled 'Buy'.
If you can keep track of whether your item is in column 1, 2 or 3, , you can keep tabbing through until you hear 'one' - this is the quantity in its text form field. You are now in a new table row. Next you come to the 'buy' push button. This means the row with item and buy button takes 2 tabs for each column.
The buy buttons might be easier to use than trying to simulate the mouse moves, so long as you know the overall column position. Hopefully, that's something that Jaws might help with.
Maybe a Jaws user could have a go at this - I can get NVDA to give me a pretty good description of the layout, but it won't report on the mousedown, mouseup and all the rest of that. 

Presumably being able to read tooltips is a verbosity setting.
Sorry about this amateur hour! but I'm sure someone on the list can take you further than I can. No doubt all decent people are asleep at the moment.

Hi Vince and thanks for your swift reply. How do I check if JAWS 7 is picking up tool tips? Is there a reason why this site requires the mouse button to be pressed where as on most other shopping sites I use enter is sufficient?Does it mean anything that every link on the page I'm looking at says visited though I've never been to most of them? Sorry to fire questions back at you but I don't understand what I'm not doing. I am succeeding in putting stuff in my basket but not the items I want which is a bit silly.

Tim, not sure what you're doing, but I did get this to work. If your screen reader can pick up tooltips, you should get feedback that your basket is updated when you hold the mouse button down on the graphic next to the item you've selected. It's all a bit quicvkand seems vague, but I did end up with the right items in my basket.

Hi Listers
I'm trying to shop at goodnessdirect.co.uk but am failing to place stuff in my basket. Text on their check out page reads:
You can now add items to your basket without having to return to this screen each time. Just click on the item you would like to buy and hold your mouse button down for a second. A prompt will appear to inform you that one of these items has been added to your basket. Just click to shop. How easy is that! 

Is this a page autthoring issue or am I just doing it wrong?
