[bcab] Re: SSH and JAWS

Hi Bob,

To give another practical answer as Richard did, also you might try
Reflections. I think it is WRQ that sell this. I have used it for over 10
years through its various versions, now up to V13 I think. It behaves
perfectly with JAWS with braille for both telnet access and ssh access and
has a very neat Windows explorer type interface for doing more demanding ftp
transfers than can easily be done via the Windows command line prompt.

I did try putty and it worked reasonably well though, in my experience, the
cursor was always one cell to the right of where it should have been, a bit
off-putting when trying to edit your command history to say the least.
That's why I moved to a later version of Reflections, V11 and beyond
provides ssh built in.

Hope this helps, if you need more, contact me direct.

Cheers,
Phil.

Subject: [bcab] SSH and JAWS

Hi folk

Any info/tips on this would probably earn my undying gratitude, since it
might well make all the difference between my retaining or losing
employment, and consequently, have a significant and lasting impact on my
continuing ability to purchase vast quantities of alcohol (:->).

We have never really found a satisfactory solution to the problems presented
to a screenreader user remotely accessing our huge domain of W2K servers -
Windows Terminal Services, CITRIX, and all that stuff, so The Company are
planning to shift me from the "too-difficult-drawer" to a team which
supports Sun Solaris machines, where, it is hoped that, with a bit of
on-the-job training from new colleagues, added to my existing UNIX
knowledge, I may soon be able to offer a useful contribution. As part of
this new setup I shall no longer be permitted to use telnet (which used to
work fine with JAWS and my beat-up old Handy Tech display). We are required
to use SSH. I have so far tried this with Putty and Teraterm, but, certainly
with the current configurations, neither seems to work satisfactorily. When
I was using telnet and issued command-line instructions, sure, I had to use
the JAWS cursor to review resulting output, but I always ended up with a
cursor sitting nicely at the # prompt waiting for my next input. Not so with
Putty and Teraterm - do they offer a cursor at all? Should I be using a
completely different emulator? Are there in existence JAWS scripts which
would make Putty and/or Teraterm more friendly. Any advice most welcome.

tia.

Regards
Bob
