[bcab] Re: SOFTWARE CAUSING PC TO RESTART

Hi Wendy there are so many things that could be behind this problem.

The first thing is, to establish whether there is good communication between
the PC and printer. If
you go into "start menu, settings, printers and faxes", the specific printer
should be there as an
icon. If it is, press ALT Enter on it to bring up the properties dialog, then
ALT T to try printing
a test page. IF the test page worked then at least you know hardware
communication is working
okay.

The second thing would be, to check that the software is installed correctly.
Assuming that it is,
do NOT uninstall and re-install it again unneccessarily, as 2 lots of drivers
for the same printer
being installed can cause more problems than one. In actual fact when you
looked into ""start menu,
settings, printers and faxes", if there were 2 instances of the printer there,
you will need to
delete both and install it again once only, to prevent this from happening.

A third thing you could try, immediately after pressing the regular CTRL P
shortcut to start the
print process, try pressing ALT P, to bring up the "printing preferences"
options. There may be
something there that needs adjusting. e g paper size or type.

Beyond those options, the thing to do would be to try and run the software with
a menial task rather
than a large one. Just try doing a very basic label with one word in it, and
printing.

And going beyond that, there are still a number of possibilities. Questions
such as "Does the
manufacturers software have a clash with some other software on your PC?",
"does it use a lot of
memory?", and "has the installation replaced a core Windows XP driver file?"
are all valid. You
might need an expert to figure these last options out, as they often requires
"playing detective" to
ascertain the exact cause.

Anyway, hope these suggestions are helpful. & Good luck!

Subject: [bcab] SOFTWARE CAUSING PC TO RESTART

I have just bought a Brother QL-500 label printer, and have installed its
accompanying P-touch software. This is in three parts; P-touch address
book, P-touch editor and the printer driver. Having experienced problems
getting the printer to work, I went to the Brother Solutions site which
recommended downloading the latest versions of the software. I uninstalled
everything and downloaded and installed the latest versions.

I think I have got the printer working, but the main problem is that when I
launch P-touch editor and try to create labels, as soon as I try to alter
settings, print or save, my PC shuts down and restarts.

I have Windows XP Home and JAWS version 6.1. I have contacted Brother about
this problem, but I wonder whether any of you have had similar problems with
other software, and if so, what might be the cause.

Wendy
