[bcab] Re: Reading PDFs

Thanks David. The strange thing was that the pages behaved in this case as if they contained selectable text. I too can use FineReader to scan files, but it's another job during the day I could manage without! And this file came from Adobe ????

The reason this is happening is due to the fact that the pdf is made up
of scanned bitmap images. The headings and page numbers are often in
text, but the actual body of each page is an image. The upshot of this
is that however good your screenreader, you won't get it to reead it. I
use finereader which will ocr a pdf and convert it to readable text, but
I have to admit such pdfs are a pain.

Dave.

Ian, for what it's worth, I tried it with Thunder. Normally, Thunder
will
cope pretty well if I select text in a PDF file and trigger the speech,
but
as soon as I selected most pages here, I had a warning that the page may
be
blank or be a graphic. Err, haven't come across quite that scenario
before!
Text either selects or there isn't any. This seems to be a bit of both -
I
don't understand how that could be, but that's what I've found.

Ian

The pdf did not seem to read with Zoomtext Neospeech. The only parts
which
were readable were the side bar and the web links in the document.

As a matter of interest, I have had problems with some pdf but most
read
in
their entirety. Equipment manuals downloaded from web sites are
invaluable
for reading.

Kind regards

Charles Crisp

Hi all Jaws and Supernova users (or other V I screen reader users)
preferably on Broadband

I am doing some work on the readability of P D F documents with screen
readers for the British Dyslexia Association's Contact magazine and
our
web site. It may also be relevant for the Right to Read Campaign.

Adobe have a PDF on "Creating Accessible PDF Documents with Adobe
Acrobat" at
http://www.adobe.com/enterprise/accessibility/pdfs/acro7_pg_ue.pdf.
(Its
10MB)

I wonder if any Jaws or Supernova users would mind taking a look at it
for a couple of minutes for me. Can you hear it all? (because the T T
S
systems that I have used can't, including the Acrobat built in one.
Specifically can you hear:
Page 1 subhead lines 3 & 4 "A guide for publishing PDF . . ."
Page 2 the copyright & trademark notice
Page 3 Contents page line 4 + -- do you hear anything between
"Software
described in this guide 1" and "Acrobat system requirements 2"

Many Thanks in Anticipation for all feedback.
