Hello all
I did not try Open Office recently but like to clarify a few things about
Java:
The Java bridge is required to connect any screen reader to a Java
application.
So you must make sure that it is installed on your computer. In old
versions of Java it had to be installed after every update of Java because
it was installed each time to a different folder. From update 10 of Java 6
it is installed to the same folder so it should be sufficient to install the
Java bridge only once.
Not all Java programs need the Java bridge (but many including open office
do) it depends on the visual components used. Those who use Eclipse the
development system will know that it is written in Java and it is perfectly
accessible out of the box by all screen readers without the Java bridge.
Open office is now in version 3 which is very accessible under Linux with
Orca the Linux screen reader.
Being Java it is exactly the same program under all operating systems. The
reason that Windows lucks behind is because the screen readers vendors did
not put yet enough effort to handle it lets hope this is changing soon.
Regards
Isaac

Hi Bernard, haven't seen any replies to this. I am only speaking from vague
memories of recent discussions on this. As I remember it, Open Office is
written in Java which makes it difficult/almost impossible for screen
readers, but System Access is the best at present. I know people are
working on its accessibility, and of course the screenreaders keep
developing. I believe Window Eyes has a very recently developed script
which gives better access to Java than the Java Bridge. As to Jaws - I
don't know, but don't think it is workable.

Hello all,
Can anyone tell me if they have tried out the Open Office version 3.+
software with Jaws, and if so, how successful was it? In general, is Open
Office worth trying out as a blind user?
