Thanks both!
Well, in terms of my previous experiance of programming I did some
very simple bits when I could still see on a Spectrum, in 'Basic', and
more recently did a very small bit in 'basic' under DOS' (I was blind
by this time and using HAL 5 for DOS), I've been to university and did
a Masters after my BSc in Biology, so I'm more than happy with online
texts and resources to teach myself from, so I don't think that bit
should be a problem. In some ways I'm not entirely sure what I want to
'get out' of learning programming, I guess in part to just be able to
understand more fully how it all works, and should I get good enough
at it maybe even produce a few useful things; A few times over the
last few years I've been doing something on the PC and thought, how,
in the DOS days I'd just have done a batch file to perform the task,
and at other times something which I know a good programmer could
probably knock up a bit of code to perform the task easier than doing
it manually... Also, in terms of work, eventually I'd like to get on
to some of the more recent/complicated languages, as a lot of the job
ADverts now for jobs I'd otherwise consider in biological sciences are
wanting the applicant to have a programming language or two as well as
their biological sciences BSc Masters or PhD....
The link to the visual basic 2005 express would be really handy if you
could find it, plus the JAWS scripts; I've seen a lot of stuff on VB
2005 on the net, so I think that is fairly well supported in terms of
guides and manuals etc, and from what I have read I think its 'basic'
enough to serve as an entry point for me to learning to programme,
whilst still having enough 'power' to it to take me some way into the
learning process.
I do have one friend who was a programmer professionally but quite
some years ago, I think once I'd got the basics of it all he might
prove quite useful to talk about things with.
Cheers.
Mark
