Hi,
If I go back into coding now it will be Linux/Unix based. I would really like
to work for a company that do Internet appliances, usually they run on a Linux
operating system, and provide security services to Windows networks (eg spam/AV
filtering for email, etc).
Smaller businesses like the one I work for seem to want the developers to do
everything, and sometimes the network guys (like me) seem to get paid more than
the developers!
Having said that, I enjoyed the coding I did for the telephone system last year.
Andrew.

Andrew,
I don't think you're alone in having a preference for backend
coding. We employ several backend programmers, who build the application
that is then connected to the front-end interface. We employ quite different
people to design and build the front-end, because this requires quite
distinct skills. Usability and design for example.
Regards,
Léonie.

Hi All,
I started doing some code for various people in 2003/04, but found I liked
the actual coding more than I did the designing that had to go on behind it
- i.e, mainly designing the GUI, and working out the human aspect of it).
These days (got I am sounding old!) I tend to program Unix systems, as well
as programming Cisco kit (which isn't programming, but has an art of its
own). The last system I worked on was an IVR system written in the VOS
language.
Andrew.

I'm still a developer, although I'm constantly aware of the difficulties
experienced by myself and other programmers who are visually impaired.
Despite new technology, we are still playing catchup, and as I've been
programming since 1978, I'm beginning to get a little tired of it.
Having
said all that, I was recently asked to give advice to a young person about
to embark on a programming career, and having told him all this, I
encouraged him to give it a go, as I felt the had the ability to absorb new
technology, and marry it with the demands of a programming environment.
Was
I right?
Dave.

Hi all,
in a more general discussion about employment of blind people on another
list, the following assertion was made:
"programming arrived but I understand has changed and very few blind people
> work in that field nowadays". Discuss.
Cheers,
Clive
