[bcab] Re: Problems with a potential new employer

Hi,

This conditional employment thing is quite worrying, and seems to be used more
and more often now. I know someone else from these lists that is having a
similar position, and someone locally to me who had the interview in early
January, but who's start date is continually being pushed back (now to the end
of May) because of system incompatibilities. In the case of the later, which I
have taken a bit of an interest, the guy can't get to speak to anyone who is
dealing with the case, or who is testing the software etc. I think he is
getting help from ATW now, but even so, it is something that we shouldn't have
to deal with. When I started work for my current employer, I had a 3 month
probation period, and started on schedule and with minimal fuss. This seems a
lot farer to me than having someone say they would like them to work for them,
but we can't give you a start date until we look at the technical challenges.
I don't know what I would say if I was met with a similar response now.

Andrew.

Hi D J,

I'd endorse all that Leonie says about the Equal Opportunities policy. This
would be strengthened even further if they are signed up or trying to get
accredited as a two ticks (positive about disabled people) employer. It may
be worth checking with a sighted person whether the Two Tics symbol appears
as one of the logos at the top of their publications, including job
application forms. In case you're asking a sighted person who hasn't seen
it, the two ticks symbol has two ticks (no surprises there), inside a
circle. That circle has the words "Positive about disabled people " written
around the inner circumference of the logo. Quite ironic that the
Department of Employment designed a graphic with wording in it, which
automatically disappeared with the picture when you put a text version
together for access reasons.

Best,
Clive

DJ,

As the others have said, this is a delicate position to be in. That
said, there have been some good ideas on how to address the situation.

Ask for a clear definition of the conditions being placed upon you.
Then ask to see a copy of the company's Equal Opportunities policy. If they
have an HR department, they will certainly have an EO policy.

I suspect that it will contain a declaration that the company employ
people on merit, regardless of gender, race, religion, disability etc. If
the conditions they're placing on you are disability related, asking to see
the EO policy might help them understand that it won't wash with you,
without you having to throw the DDA at them.

Regards,
Léonie.

Subject: [bcab] Problems with a potential new employer

Hi all.

I'm looking for some advice.

Back in December I interviewed for a job with an IT company here in Belfast.

My role is to be a Systems Engineer.

I'm finding HR very legalistic and at points awkward.

The lady from HR who is dealing with acommadations for me I'm finding a
wirlwind to speak to and at times quite intimadating.

I've a fair idea that the technical team, (who I'll be working with), will
be fine once I'm in the position but the lady from

HR keeps stressing to me I've not been made a full offer. I've been made an
offer on a conditional basis.

The condition being that they can see I can practically do the job.

I was just speaking to the lady from HR and she's quite annoyed and is quite
forceful that I understand and that RNIB

understand that this is a conditional offer.

She's also quite annoyed at the length of time the whole process of access
to work is taking. i explained to her I find this

too frustrating and unfortunately it's the way it goes and it's out of my
control to push it faster!

I thought telling her this would at least let her see it's not my doing, but
she just sortive said, "Yeah ok but I'm still

pissed off", without actually saying that.

I just found this last thing inappropriate to complain to me about.

I don't feel comfortable talking to this lady and I don't want to hit them
in the face with the DDA. This would be an

excellent company to work for and I'm afraid if I say anything to the lady
I'm having problems with I'll rock the boat so to

speak.

RNIB are involved for the technical asessement and I've just got a phone
call from them wanting to arrange a time that they

can meet with people from the company and myself to do this asessement.

This might be what happens in the scary world of work for VI's but it's
bugging me.

I know I could be very hardline and contact the lady from HR and ask her to
justify the conditional offer. I could ask her

if other candadates where offered a conditional offer and if they then they
are discriminating against me.

I passed the interview with flying colours and correct me if I'm wrong that
is what they should have been basing an offer on?

This lady I'm finding can be so forceful that you almost have to be rude
yourself to get a word in!

Any thoughts?

Cheers
Barry
