Hi Simon, as far as I know there is no way to get any discount on Jaws other
than to buy a site
license of at least 5 licenses. If the person buying the software is
registered blind they normally
can get VAT exemption. However this still makes for an expensive product...
You may or may not be
able to haggle with some vendors, but I have never heard of a charity doing
that. Jaws also does
not come up for sale second hand, very often at all as this requires a license
transfer fee.
One option, you could do your testing using the demo version which is
downloadable from Freedom
Scientific, however bear in mind that you will only get 35 minute long sessions
maximum before
needing to reboot.
Something else you could do, is test the site using a different product
instead, such as the free
screen reader NVDA.
If the site works okay with NVDA then it should definitely work with Jaws. And
at least you would
have infinite testing time that way.
Sticking to the W3C web accessibility guidelines, avoiding flash altogether,
and using CSS, should
ensure that the site is accessible enough, and many sites out there are
"accessible accidentally" in
this way. But as far as I know the only way you will be able to tell what
screen reader people are
using when they visit (if any) is to have a screen reader accessible short
survey on the site,
asking the visitors. You could also ask people to participate politely, on
some of the Jaws
specific mailing lists. If there is an incentive, such as a competition, that
may get more
favourable results. Either way though, whatever feedback system you use will
need to be accessible
and usable, otherwise people won't be able to complete it.

I was wondering if anything could help me with something.
We would like to start testing our new website, launch date end of
August with JAWS, can anyone recommend how we get the software and is
there a discount for charities? Also is there any way to capture how
many users are accessing our website using assistive technologies such
as JAWS?
Thanks
Simon

Subject: [bcab] Problem with Outlook
Hi folks
I'm having problems with a machine running XP Home. I've installed
Office 2003 and now, every time I try to shut down the machine, I get a
message asking if I want to end wms idle. When I restart the machine,
JAWS takes for ever to start. I wonder if anyone else has come across
this and if so, how they cured the problem. I think it may be something
to do with Outlook, but can't be certain.
Any help gratefully received.
Steve
