[bcab] Re: Open Office

David,

Thanks for the link and all. However I have finally managed to download java access bridge(as the sun installer manager isn't accessible), but when I try to change the accessibility option in open office, it says java access bridge isn't installed.

I searched for files and folders and saw the java access bridge.DLL file. Any thoughts on this? Do you know where I might have gone wrong? Thanks in advance.

Regards,

LU

Dear Lu,

I have just tried Open Office writer with Jaws 9 and it seems to work
absolutely fine .

I would suggest that you follow the instructions for making Open Office
Accessible on the following link.
http://www.nvda-project.org/wiki/ApplicationSupport#OpenOffice.org
These are the instructions which are supposed to make Open Office Accessible
to the free Screen Reader NVDA. Hopefully this will work for your Jaws as
well. It has certainly worked for me.

Actually as a thought it might be worth downloading NVDA as well just in
case for some reason this all does not work with your version of Jaws 9.
NVDA can use the voices which come with Jaws 9, though not the Real Direct
voices which come with Jaws 10.
NVDA is pretty much identical to using Jaws in most common keystrokes.
Insert F12 will read the time, Insert down arrow will say all etc. By
setting up NVDA to work with your default voice you would get a very
similar experience to using Jaws with Open Office.

David,
,

Does the java access bridge come with open office or did you download it
independently? I'm just wondering if it might work with JFW 9 as well.

Regards,

LU

Dear Tristan

I installed Open Office a couple of weeks ago. I appear to be able to use
at
least Open Office Writer with no Problem with Jaws 10. I have not tested
Calc out properly but I have not encountered problems yet here also.
Writer provides typing echo and obeys normal Jaws reading commands. The
file
menus are also completely accessible.
I do have Java Access Bridge installed and the Accessibility option turned
on in the Tools section of Writer. So far the only slight annoyance is
with
the save prompt dialogue box when you exit a document without saving. Jaws
reads the options discard cancel and save fine when tabbing but you have
to
route Jaws to PC to actually read the full text of the dialogue box.

I installed this out of interest only but I would certainly say it is a
viable word processor for use with Jaws.
I have had some initial encouraging results with NVDA also but NVDA
definitely needed the Access Bridge installed and the Accessibility Option
turned on in Open Office for it to work.

It is still the case that OpenOffice is no go for JAWS at the moment.
This is a shame because it is otherwise quite good. However at present
the way the application is currently developed means that JAWS cannot be
scripted for it.
