Leon,
Thanks for your advice. However, the problem seems to have disappeared
almost as magically as it appeared. There were a couple of updates which I
have downloaded and installed. I don't know why this should have solved the
problem but it seems that once you have all the updates, the problem
disappears.
Iain.

Hi Ian, in my view the safest and best option is to completely remove all
Norton products from your
system, using Symantec's own all-product removal tool. This can be found at
http://tinyurl.com/4kave
It does a much tidier job than a manual clean up of a glitchy norton, which
can be a nightmare.
After that it's up to you. You could put Norton back on as a fresh install
& it might not be so
glitchy. However you could also consider using cheaper and more accessible
products in place of it,
such as
AVG free edition
www.free.grisoft.com
or NOD32 anti virus (free trial available, full product £46 for 3 years)
https://secure.eset.co.uk/order/category.asp?intCategoryId=7
Both these products are as accessible as Norton to screen readers if not
more so, and consume less
system memory than it does as well.

So does this mean that Norton have let loose a corrupted update component?
If I uninstall and reinstall and then accept updates, will I not end up
again where I am now?

Hi Tim & Iain,
It sounds to me as though you may have a corrupt installation of Norton
Anti virus, in particular with the Office Plug-in component.
I would recommend uninstalling Norton AV, then using the "Windows Install
Clean up utility" to remove the references to "Symantec" and "Norton", once
fully removed proceed with reinstalling Norton AV.
The "Windows Install Clean up utility" can be downloaded from:

Tim,
At least your message lets me know that I am not alone. I too have done
full scans since this started to happen with nothing being found. I'll have
to try MS Word to see if I get simlar problems. I can only suppose that
there must have been some kind of Norton update between Friday evening and
Saturday which is causing this problem as I haven't done anything to my
system and it only started to happen on Saturday.

[bcab] Norton problem
Please respond to
bcab@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Hi Listers. Can anyone help?
On starting up my system, after Windows has launched, I'm getting two
dialogue boxes which I can't understand. The first says:
Please wait while Windows configures Norton 2006.
and the second says:
Norton 2006 does not support the repair feature. Uninstall and reinstall.
and there's an OK button. Clicking this produces an egg timer but there's
no hard disc activity and nothing happens.
I can get rid of this dialogue box but it reappears on launching MS Word
and Word has consequently become quite difficult to open.
I've carried out two full system scans in the last two days definitely with
the latest virus definition files from Symantec and no problem is reported.
What's going on?
Thanks v much in advance for any ideas.
Regards
Tim Gebbels
