Hi Iain,
I am not aware of a specific Norton update which has caused this
problem, this may or may not be the case. However based on your
description of the fault the steps provided would be those which I would
take to resolve the problem.
If you follow the steps provided and only experience the fault again
once the Norton updates have been re-applied then it is highly likely
that the fault is with the update, in which case it may be worth
consulting Symantec.

So does this mean that Norton have let loose a corrupted update
component? If I uninstall and reinstall and then accept updates, will I
not end up again where I am now?

Hi Tim & Iain,
It sounds to me as though you may have a corrupt installation of Norton
Anti virus, in particular with the Office Plug-in component.
I would recommend uninstalling Norton AV, then using the "Windows
Install Clean up utility" to remove the references to "Symantec" and
"Norton", once fully removed proceed with reinstalling Norton AV.
The "Windows Install Clean up utility" can be downloaded from:

Tim,
At least your message lets me know that I am not alone. I too have done
full scans since this started to happen with nothing being found. I'll
have to try MS Word to see if I get simlar problems. I can only suppose
that there must have been some kind of Norton update between Friday
evening and Saturday which is causing this problem as I haven't done
anything to my system and it only started to happen on Saturday.

[bcab] Norton problem
Hi Listers. Can anyone help?
On starting up my system, after Windows has launched, I'm getting two
dialogue boxes which I can't understand. The first says:
Please wait while Windows configures Norton 2006.
and the second says:
Norton 2006 does not support the repair feature. Uninstall and
reinstall.
and there's an OK button. Clicking this produces an egg timer but
there's no hard disc activity and nothing happens.
I can get rid of this dialogue box but it reappears on launching MS Word
and Word has consequently become quite difficult to open.
I've carried out two full system scans in the last two days definitely
with the latest virus definition files from Symantec and no problem is
reported.
What's going on?
Thanks v much in advance for any ideas.
Regards
Tim Gebbels
