[bcab] Re: Netbooks

Tony,

I have spent quite a lot of time trying to come up with a workable plan to
control my hi-fi from my PC, especially as my music collection has finally
been ripped to a networked hard drive.

I tried using a digital media server, a box that attached to the hi-fi and
connected to a piece of server software on my laptop which located the hard
drive music storage. These usually have a TV output that gives you remote
control over your library and I think can be quite rewarding if you can see
the TV, which I cannot. The software on the laptop can come in many
flavours and I found one that linked into Winamp and automatically played
the track through the media server called one2share.

Stability was the reason I quit this setup, as it regularly didn't want to
play. Also, the media server box I had was limited to WEP encryption so
limited the whole wi-fi network.

I have been looking for something simpler, effectivly just sending the
output of my soundcard to some sort of wi-fi connecter to my RCA plugs on my
amp - but I haven't found it yet.

In the end I have rigged up an old clapped out laptop stripped down to
operating system, Winamp, sound card, wi-fi card and a long cable to the
amp. I've got to say that although this doesn't have the cool factor, it
does have the works all the time factor.

Don't know if any of this ramble is of any use.

Cheers
Karl
