[bcab] Re: Microsoft Training.

Hi,

It might be possible to search for a course in your local area designed for V.I people. In Motherwell College there is what is called Access to education. There are 2 V.I lecturers in the class and a fully sighted lecturer. They teach students Window-eyes and various Microsoft packages including Word, outlook express etc.

I just finished teaching Window-eyes and various Microsoft packages to V.I students at Bell College in Hamilton and I thinkthis is a growing field with the DDA being incorporated in the educational system.

It would be nice if there was a list of educational establishments where this training can be found. although I am led to believe that there are these facilities in most major Colleges, again there is no defined structure with some good and some bad fascilities. Colleges have now to follow the Disability discrimination act and provide this traing. Its the old story some do and some don't.It wouldn't do any harm to check local Colleges to find out if they do provide this type of training.

The class at Motherwell has no specific age limit. An example is a 74 year old student who went on to University and is in the process of designing a portable scanner.

Some students just take the course to learn the basics and don't go on to further education.

Kind Regards, John

Hi Tink,

Depending on the person's level of sight, and on the level of knowledge she already has in this field, I'd think seriously about trying to find a good accessible book to work through rather than attend a course. If she is dependent on a screen reader, the experience of trying to keep up with a mainstream course might be so daunting as to be counter-productive.

I did Microsoft Certified Professional in administering W2K a few years ago, and managed to pass the exam (a sighted amanuensis typed in my answers to the automated test paper). I worked through the CD version of a book which included exercises and questions similar to the exam questions. Sites such as Safari are really good sources of on-line books for this purpose, but she'd need a recommendation for the book which relates to the material she needs to cover.

I know there's a lot to be said socially for attending a real course, and that with the right tutor or the right set-up in the class-room it can be a positive experience, but if she does decide to do the course, she'll need to think seriously about exactly how she is going to follow examples which will be largely mouse-based, in real time. Maybe working closely with a partner would be the way to go.

Anyway, this probably doesn't answer the question, but thought I'd contribute my two penn'orth.

Regards,

Tim Pennick

Good evening,

I've recently been contacted by someone who is thinking about
studying in the Autumn. She asks:

Start quote:
"I need to know which courses are suitable. Since courses start in
September, I should like to get enrolled. Our local college has a Microsoft
Certified Desktop Support Technician course. Are you able to advise."
End quote.

If anyone knows anything of this course, or can suggest any other
courses of a similar vein that she might investigate at her local college,
I'll get back to her. I know information is a bit scanty, so if I can relay
any pertinent questions that might help, let me know.

As always, thanks for your help.

Regards,
Tink.
