Hi Leon,
Thanks once again for the additional information. I've downloaded the RNIB
guide and the description of the remote is exactly the same as the one that
comes with the Aldi model.
The only items that the RNIB has as extras are the batteries and the IR
(Infra Red) remote control extender. Everything else seems to be the same.
There doesn't seem to be a separate volume control for the AD.
The Netgem i-Player does have a separate AD volume control but I've always
found this a bit cumbersome and also a bit hit-and-miss. It also seemed to
revert back to the default volume when changing channels.
Thanks again.
Best regards, Ian.

There is a full user guide to the MFR-300 on the RNIB shop website which (to
their credit) is very
detailed and descriptive, first class in fact. It's in DOC format. at
http://onlineshop.rnib.org.uk/downloads/instructions/TV02.doc
Still not sure whether the Aldi and Rnib products are the same, but going by
the above the remote
for the RNIB one certainly sounds good. Also, a good point was raised
earlier, it's one thing to
have AD enabled, but another entirely to have a talking programme guide,
such as the old Netgem
i-player had.

Dear Ian, Thanks for the tip on the cheap AD reciever from Aldi. Looks good!
The link you sent broke up a bit so I've pasted it intact below. One thing
about this reciever is that it does not require a scart connection, it is
therefore extremely usable, and very much like (and perhaps exactly the same
as, see below), the TVonics MFR-300 one.
Three clues as to why they might be one and the same product, under a
different brand are:-
1. The Aldi product photo has the word TEVION on it, which is very similar
sounding, to TVonics. 2. TVonics model MFR-300 has exactly the same spec,
even the dimensions which are 70mm x 27mm x 54mm. 3. In the photo's of the
two different products they are clearly the same except for the branding.
The difference is, that an MFR-300 reciever from RNIB, costs £69.99. Double
the cost of ALDI's one.
I'm making no comment about this price difference here, just stating the
facts as I found them. The fact of the matter is though, if you are a
registered blind person who wants an AD freeview receiver, firstly according
to the above information (unless I am wrong) you can save money by NOT
buying from RNIB. Secondly, if you are prepared to wait, according to the
RNIB's own information
on the digital switchover, at
http://tinyurl.com/38qy6j
If you are in a household with one registered blind/partially
sighted.disabled person, you will be
able to get one of these boxes FOR FREE. However, to quote "The assistance
will probably not be
available more than a year before switchover happens in the region the
person lives in.".

PS: I needed to use Tinyurl.com to create usable shortcuts to the RNIB pages
referred to above, as to this day and for the last 3 years, the long and
user-unfirendly URL's created by the RNIB website's content management
system, have not been acknowedged as a problem by them or addressed.

Subject: [bcab] Micro Freeview receiver, was: Re: Slightly off-topic: Survey
about TV audio Description Services¬
Hi Clive,
Thanks for the heads-up on this survey. I've just completed it and found it
pretty painless. The more we can publicise our use of Audio Description the
better.
As an aside, I have just purchase a new (well new to me anyway) micro
Freeview receiver which purports to support Audio Description. It cost
£34.99 from Aldi and measures 70mm (W) × 27mm (H) × 54mm (D), and is very
light. You can see more details at: HYPERLINK
"http://www.aldi.co.uk/uk/html/offers/58_5420.htm"http://www.aldi.co.uk/uk/h
tml/offers/58_5420.htm
Haven't had time to try it yet but this is a lot cheaper and smaller than
the old Netgem i-player. I thought I would buy it so that I can take it with
me when I visit friends and family who don't have an Audio Description
facility.
Even in its packaging with its power pack and cables etc it is small enough
to put in a shoulder bag or slipped in the corner of a suitcase.
Hope this is of use to someone else.
I'll let you know how I get on with it in a few days when I get time to set
it up.
Kind regards, Ian.

Hi Tiddy,
um...you don't need it. It's a telephone survey on the freefone number
listed in the original email. That's: 0800 279 8779.

Services¬
Hi folks,
sorry about the short notice, but I only found out about this from a
different list about an hour ago, and have just completed the survey. If
you have a visual impairment and an interest in audio description services
on TV, this could be for you. The survey only runs until close of business
tomorrow, so get in quick if you want your views to be counted. Each time
anyone takes part in the survey, RNIB receives a £20 donation. Each
participant receives a £10 gift voucher. BCAB members not interested in the
gift voucher could always flog it and donate to BCAB EyeT4All (smile)
Best,
Clive
