I was getting tired when I did this so I may have missed something obvious.

Try this. Select the whole sheet, open the Format menu and choose
Conditional formatting. Leave the first combo set to "Cell value is".
Set the second to "not equal to". In the third control, an edit area,
enter
=$IV$65536
then Tab to the Format button and press it. In the second dialogue, set
up the borders you want. That should make any cell that contains
anything except a formula that results in zero take on the borders you
specified.

This will work so long as IV65536 is empty, and you don't add any
columns or delete column IV or row 65536. All you really need is a cell
that will remain empty and stay on the sheet.

Is that what you want?

Hi List,
I've been trying to set up some custom formatting on an excel document
but have come into a little trouble and wondered if anyone could give me
an idea on how to resolve it.

My sheet is set as number cells throughout for purposes that I won't
bother you with but am really unwilling to change even though many of
the cells contain text.

A space is a valid cell in my document and often occurs as a result of
some formulae.

I would like all cells in the document to be bordered individually if
they contain any information, and that includes a blank cell with a
single space in it.  Any cell which is empty completely I would like to
leave un-bordered.

Any ideas please?
