Hi Leon.=20
It's pretty easy to turn off.
Note! I've got version 6.63 here but the method should be the same.
1. hit control space to take you in to the Hal control panel.
2. from the speech menu select document settings.
3. from this menu select internet explorer.
4. there is a check box which is labelled: "show link urls in the list
utility."
Un ticking this box will just then read the links for your student.
Cheers.
Nick.

Subject: [bcab] Links list utility in Supernova/HAL?
I am trying to help someoone with an internet course using Supernova 7,
and recently came up against
a HAL issue with the links list utility which I cannot seem to resolve.
The problem is, that the=20
links
utility does do a good job of listing all the links on a given webpage
(so that they can be browsed
using the up & down arrow keys in the required order, i e tab order, a
to zed order etc). It's a
great tool. However after each link listed in the list utility is
focussed on, it insists on=20
reading out
the full URL to that link.
This really is a problem because sometimes those URL's are exceedingly
long. I am always griping
about long URL's I know, and no matter what views were given in my
previous discussion about this, I
am utterly convinced that excessively long URL's are both an
accessibility and usability obstacle.
This is a genuine case in point, instead of the links list utility being
able to announce the name
of one link then move on the to the name of the next one, it says the
name of the first link, the
URL of that link, then the name of the second link followed by the URL
of that link. It does not
exactly help my student, who is new to using speech, to hear
"home" followed by h t t p colon slash slash gobbledy gook home dot h t
m l
"contact" followed by h t t p colon slash slash gobbledy gook contact
dot h t m l
etc etc.
In summary this effect renders the links list utility far less effective
than it could be. In the=20
end
I had the student using the up/down arrow keys to go up and down the
list, with his right hand,
whilst keeping his left hand ready on the left CTRL key to silence the
speech as he did so, to stop
him from having to listen to all those long URL's being babbled out!
I hope I have explained this problem clearly. What I'm specifically
wondering is whether anyone
knows IF the links list utility can be set to NOT babble out the full
URL of every link in it's
index? I have searched the Supernova 7 manual for a solution but to no
avail. And I don't believe
that the JAWS web page links lister (invoked by Insert F7) has the same
design fault?
Any help appreciated!
Leon Gilbert.
