Hi Steve. I have a similar problem when editing material with Sound Forge.
When sound files are at a comfortable volume with SF, Jaws is deafening.
Without trying it I guess DVD volumes are lower also than JFW though I've never
found it a huge problem although, thinking about it, I'd never listen to a DVD
through my laptop's speakers anyway given a choice.
Certainly, external speakers would be a solution but only if they have their
own power supply and thus their own amplifier. If they were the unpowered sort
the problem would get worse as you'd be trying to drive speakers from what is
actually only intended as a headphone output from the sound card. Look at the
master volume as Graham suggests, but the more I think about it, the more a set
of external speakers would seem to be your best option; I suspect the master
volume on your card is fine.

PS: or you could rip the DVD content and put it on a portable media player!
That's my favourite option at the moment.

Subject: [bcab] Laptop and volume level
Hi list. Can anyone offer any advice on laptops and the volume level they
have? I've just got an Advent 7201 with Vista Premium on it. I've upped the
audio levels and JFW is working well. However, when playing a DVD, the volume
is very low...even with the windows media player at full volume. Is this usual
for laptops?, as I've never had any experience with laptops. I've only ever
had a desk top PC and I've probably been spoilt with the volume, so I'm just
trying to find out if laptops are usually quite a bit lower. BTW, if this is
the case, do people use external/plugin speakers for watching DVD's? cheers
Steve.
