Hi Leon,
You can, in fact, do what you want with JAWS too, but it is not on by
default.
Go to Configuration Manager, Set Options, Advanced Options. From there,
check the checkbox that says "Rely on MSAA for list views". Here is the
help text associated with this check box:-
** Help Text Begins **
Rely on MSAA for List Views
Check this check box to have JAWS use MSAA, Microsoft Active Accessibility,
to provide
information within list views. When JAWS relies on MSAA to speak list views,
the
entire text of the selected item is spoken even if it is not visibly
displayed. After
speaking this text, JAWS speaks the size, type and date information
automatically.
You may find this option beneficial when using Braille on the desktop, as
icons with
two or more lines of text are completely displayed on the Braille line.
When this check box is not checked, JAWS speaks the displayed on screen text
of each
list view item as it is selected. Some list views display information within
columns,
and if the column width is too narrow, some of the text for an item can be
cut off,
or truncated. If items in a list view are truncated so you only hear a
portion of
the item, instead of checking this check box, you can press
CTRL+NUM PAD PLUS
to increase the size of the columns. This check box is not checked by
default.
Note: If this check box is selected, you cannot use the Customize List View
feature.
I hope this is what you want.
All the best

Subject: [bcab] Jaws and off-screen information?
Does anyone please know if there is a way to make Jaws read information
which is off the screen or
not visible, better? By this I mean that if a Window is open in it's
restored state but thanks to
unlucky window positioning it goes half off of the screen, I can't seem to
get Jaws to read the text which is offscreen.
The issue is similar with columns that are not wide enough to visually
display all the text, in any program.
Whether it's Excel or Outlook Express, if a column is not wide enough,
visually on screen you get
dot dot dot at the cutoff point halfway through the text, and this is also
what jaws reads. The
rest of the information which is "covered by the column overlap" is still
there, in fact Windoweyes reads it all by default even if it is off-screen,
but Jaws doesn't seem to be able to.
I've been through the Jaws manual, & on the FS website looking for help with
this but had no joy.
Am I correct in drawing the conclusion that Windoweyes is better than Jaws
at reading off-screen text information? If this is a true limitation in
Jaws, perhaps this is also the reason why so many users have reported
getting incomplete or cut-off information at times, it's simply because
window or dialog box positioning, or column widths, have gone askew. And
Jaws can't read offscreen information... or can it??
Any help with this technical sounding but quite possibly simple matter,
appreciated.
