[bcab] JAWS or Window-Eyes: access to PDF files

Friends

Eighteen months ago, Mark Prouse (JAWS user) and I (WE user) were invited to
look at a website being built for Norton Rose, a largish City law firm. The
builder was Ted Page.

Ted then moved onto the BBC, and has now moved from BBC, to start his own
consultancy business. He says he is still on good terms with the Beeb.

I'd be interested to know what members of this BCAB list think of what Ted
says in his email, which follows my signature. He strikes me as a decent
guy, but he may not have much knowledge of screen readers.

"I am particularly keen to push for change in the way PDFs are authored as
I'm sure it could make a big difference. I am hoping that the BBC will
commission me to make its Annual Report PDFs accessible this year. If it
does it will be a first, and it might help persuade others of the value of
doing so.

It's true that Window-Eyes is a little behind JAWS in PDF support - I will
look into what GW Micro is up to. I wouldn't be surprised if there were
plans to improve in this area soon. I recently learnt that the makers of Hal
will be including much greater support for PDFs in the next or next but one
version of that screen reader."
