Hello Wendy and All
Below is a brief description of some Java Bridge issues:
Java uses two different types of visual components; the first called 'Swing'
is more popular and requires the Bridge to work with screen readers. The
second called SWT does not require the Bridge.
Users of course don't know about internals of Java programs so installing
the Bridge is recommended; if it does not do any good it will certainly not
do any harm.
As Tim said, another type of software such as my own - SpeakOn does not use
visual components at all and therefore does not require the Bridge. In fact
it is self voicing and therefore does not require a screen reader at all.
For software that requires the Bridge, unfortunately, each time you upgrade
the JRE (Java runtime) you need to install the Bridge again. Just save the
Bridge somewhere and rerun the installer after you upgrade the JRE.
Java upgrades are available every three months or so.
As with other programming languages how accessible a piece of software
depends on the type of visual components used, if they are standard and if
the developer of the software is aware of accessibility issues. So for some
applications the Bridge works very well and with other it does not.
As far as I am aware, and I may be wrong, JAWS is the only screen reader
that supports Java at present.
Regards
Isaac

Hi Wendy,
The easiest way to do this, as Kevin pointed out, is to look at the JAWS
help system. However, I'd think twice before going to the trouble. If
you aren't having problems accessing anything, then installing the
bridge won't give you any benefits, and may be counter productive.
There are some Java applications, such as Isaac Porat's Speakon system,
which, though written in Java, don't require the bridge, because they
don't use the Graphical User Interface components of Java which is what
you need the bridge for.
Regards,
Tim Pennick

I have just been prompted to install a Java update, which I have done.
I recall that you also have to install Java Access Bridge, but can't
remember where to find this or how to do it. Could some kind person
give me the details, please?
Wendy
