Hello Isaac

I have gone into control panel, found Java and pressed enter, but nothing
was accessible.  All I got was the words Java control panel when I pressed
insert T to get the title bar.  I just closed down with alt F4.  Where do I
find the latest version of Java?  Sorry for all the stupid questions, but
this is a very new area for me.

Hello Wendy

You probably downloaded the right file anyway.  To check that AccessBridge
works start the Java application in the control panel.  If all is well you
should be able to navigate the tabs and controls like any Windows
application (please don't change any parameters in this application).

If you upgrade Java (or an installer upgrade it for you) you will need to
install AccessBridge again. However you don't need to download and run the
installer again.  Simply go to:
Program Files > Java Access Bridge >
And run install.exe
This will install all the components in any new version of Java you may
have.

The fact that you installed AccessBridge does not mean that all Java
applications will talk with JAWS.  This depends (like any Windows
application) on whether  the program was put together from standard
components and if the programmer had accessibility in mind.

Hello Isaac

I have just downloaded and installed Java Access Bridge, and have yet to see
how well it works.  However, in your message you said I would be asked to
choose from two files during the last stage of installation.  This option
did not occur, and all I had to do was check the radio button to accept the
licence agreement.  I hope I haven't done anything wrong, but it just seemed
to go through automatically.

Hello Wendy

I think the problem you encountered might be the AccessBridge after all;
without it Java Applets would not talk.

The Java console is not accessible in any case but you don't need it.  There
is a Java settings application in the control panel which is accessible once
the AccessBridge is installed but usually you will not need to set it
either.
The AccessBridge Installation was a bit involved in the past but now easy.
Please download it from:
http://java.sun.com/products/accessbridge/

You will have to go through few pages and at some stage you will have to
make sure that you check the licence agreement.  

One point, at the last stage you will be given a choice of two files The one
you want is:
accessbridge-2_0_1.exe 

You don't want the manual version which is the following link (it has the
word manual in its name).

If you installed it, JAWS should start to talk automatically with most Java
applications. Please let me know if you get any problems.

Hello Isaac

Many thanks for all that information, and I have looked at the security page
in internet options, and Java seems to be enabled.

I notice on the tools menu that there is something called Sun Java Console,
but when I enter on it nothing seems to happen.  All I get is a title bar
with minimise, maximise and close options.

I have also looked for Java Access Bridge in my programs, but it isn't
there.  I did a web search for it and got an article on how to install it,
but it all looks a bit complicated.

You may like to use the following info if you will need to use Java again:

It is always a good idea to have an updated version of Java; you have update
8 which is not the latest (update 9) but is only few months old and there is
no need for you to upgrade.

If you turned the option you described(Tools > Options > Advanced > Java
etc...)  OFF make sure that it is On again.

Java may be also turned OFF in the security settings.
Go to:
Tools > options > and choose the security tab.  Tab to the custom level
button
Press J to get to Java and navigate down the tree to java permissions and
make sure that the 'Disable java OFF is not checked.

I hope the above helps, if it doesn't I don't know what is the problem.

On a related point:
If somehow your Java has been upgraded either by yourself or by a Java
application when installed, You will need to run the Java AccessBridge
installation again.  If you installed the Java AccessBridge  already before,
chances are that it is in 'Program Files'.  Go to the Java AccessBridge
folder and run the installation file 'AccessBridge.exe' again.  This will
scan your hard disk and will install the AccessBridge components again in
any new version of Java.

The Java AccessBridge is not the cause of your problem but it might prevent
JAWS working with some Java applications after upgrade of Java.

I was trying to order something on a site the other day, and when I went to
checkout I got an error message saying that Java was not enabled.  I
couldn't get any further, so had to abandon the order.  I looked in tools,
internet options, and went to the advanced page.  I pressed J and got to the
Java section.  This is what it said.

Java (Sun)
Use JRE 1.5.0_08 for <applet> (requires restart)-ON

I have also searched JAWS configuration manager, but can't find anything
useful there.  Since the Java option in the advanced settings is on, can
anyone tell me why I couldn't go through with the order.

In case anyone wants to look, the site I was trying is

I don't know why there are two slashes at the end of that address, but there
it is.  The strange thing is that I have ordered from these people before
with no trouble.

Any help would be much appreciated.  I am using JAWS 6 and IE 6.
