All this happened after a Windows XP pro update.

Any clues as to when your problem started?  New software,
system changes, anything?

There are four Icon sizes for Windows XP that display in
different areas on your computer like your Desktop, Toolbar,
& Start Menu. These sizes are 48 × 48, 32 × 32, 24 × 24, and
16 × 16 pixels. 
Microsoft recommends icons contain these three icon size
attributes:
48 × 48 pixels
32 × 32 pixels
16 × 16 pixels

Sorry I think I meant the spacing was 43 horizontal and 43
vertical and I
think the icon size is 28. 
Does that sound better?
